    DIY budget 1x12 Bass Cab

What a great thread and a very nice DIY build! Just curious as to whether you've checked the actual tuning frequency using with the rice test? This could give you an indication of how well WinISD estimated the required port length to achieve your desired tuning.

    MIJ Squier P-Bass Pickguard

Hey, welcome to Talkbass from a fellow Ontarian! If yours is a medium scale version, the check out my post in this thread. I've got a medium scale MIJ E-series Squier P bass and I got a new pickguard from Pickguard Planet (Chandler Music) several years ago. Unfortunately they're not a...

Series vs Parallel Wiring on Bass Pickups

I can't speak to when one would work better than the other, as this is largely subjective, but I recently did a comparison of series vs. parallel wiring using the G&L MFD Split Coil pickup in my Squier medium scale P Bass. Here's the link to the thread with the comparison video including sound...

P Bass Pickup Series vs. Parallel Comparison - with Sound and Frequency Response

I'm not familiar with the S1 switch; is it a series/parallel selector? In any case, I'd love to see the comparison as well.

P Bass Pickup Series vs. Parallel Comparison - with Sound and Frequency Response

I'd be interested in that too, if anyone is willing to give it a try. The wiring change is very easy as long as the pickup has four wires. In my case, I first recorded with the original wiring plugging directly into my interface, then made the wiring change, and then recorded the same...

P Bass Pickup Series vs. Parallel Comparison - with Sound and Frequency Response

Balancing the output is a great idea if you're able to switch between the two! I totally agree that the tonal differences can only be appreciated after compensating for the level difference. I'm quite simple-minded when it comes to gear, so I've simply swapped the wiring to parallel with no...

I haven't tried that, but it's now on my list of things to try!

P Bass Pickup Series vs. Parallel Comparison - with Sound and Frequency Response

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts and experiences! I suspect the added range of the parallel sound will work well in a mix, but I haven't tried yet. And I'm not a slap player so, unless someone else borrows my bass, I'll likely never know the answer to number 2. I did find it...

P Bass Pickup Series vs. Parallel Comparison - with Sound and Frequency Response

For a while now I've been curious about how series and parallel wiring configurations affect the tonal characteristics and output level of a split-p pickup. After doing the circuit modelling and simulation with the help of many of the good folks on this forum, I finally got around to doing the...

Split P Series vs. Parallel Questions with Circuit Simulation Results

With the help of the fine folks here, I've corrected my circuit models for both series and parallel configurations including a guess of 100pF for the capacitance of each coil. I've re-run the simulations and here they are in the same colour schemes as before, black and white is series with 500k...

Split P Series vs. Parallel Questions with Circuit Simulation Results

Thanks @sikamikanico! I did some more reading about capacitance measurements (including the sites you linked) and I also read the manual for my meter (who knew!). What I found is that capacitance measurements will read high if they're measured at test frequencies below the component's self...

Split P Series vs. Parallel Questions with Circuit Simulation Results

I measured the capacitance of the coils and got values significantly higher than the 100pF suggested, about 8.2nF on each coil. I checked this with another pickup and it was in a similar range (about 5.5nF). Then I checked some capacitors of known values to verify whether my meter was off, but...

Split P Series vs. Parallel Questions with Circuit Simulation Results

@ahadl2500 thanks, I wasn't aware of that preamp. It looks interesting, but I probably won't end up adding circuitry ... I'm just a little simple-minded when it comes to that stuff and I'll probably stick with a completely passive setup. To answer some of the other questions, I should have...

Split P Series vs. Parallel Questions with Circuit Simulation Results

So I've been using the G&L MFD split P pickup with 500k volume and tone pots for a while now and I find myself wishing for more high-end clarity. Rather than try a new pickup, I was thinking of wiring the two coils in parallel rather than my current series wiring, but I have a couple of...

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

Hi Marcus, welcome to the forum and this thread! I have one of these basses too, but mine is a Squier, otherwise the same mid-eighties E serial number medium scale MIJ. I changed the pickguard on mine from the stock white one to a black one from Pickguard Planet (Chandler Music). It's not the...

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

Based on my limited experience with a few different ported combo amps, I found that the ones with higher tuning frequencies (around 55 to 60 Hz) sounded less defined in the lows (from low E to A). On two combos that had multiple ports, I tried closing one port and found that I preferred the...

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

It looks great and I'm glad you're happy with it! I'm curious to find out how the rice test frequency compares to the predicted frequency/length. Be sure to post photos when you get it painted and the grill fitted.

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

With my 2x10 I'm going with an inset baffle and a removable grill cloth on its own frame, so this isn't something I've really looked into. But I've seen some use a separate round grill cover that (I think) screws into the baffle from the outside overtop the driver.

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

Looks great so far! According to WinISD the port air velocity is over 120 m/s at 40 Hz with the 44 mm ID pipe. I have no experience with these, but everything I've read suggests that this is FAR too high. An 81 mm ID port results in a 35 m/s velocity. Perhaps those who know can offer a...

Using grains of rice for port tuning???

I agree with all of the above and will also note that I've successfully used salt for this in the past. I just posted this in another thread describing my experiences with this test.

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

With a ported cabinet, the rice (I've used salt in the past when I was out of rice) will settle at the tuning frequency as this is when the air in the port is resonating and the cone is experiencing its minimum amplitude. Lay the cab down so the driver is face-up horizontally (prop it up on...

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

Fantastic! When you get it built, I suggest also doing a simple "rice test" or "salt test" with a tone generator to verify the actual tuning frequency of the finished product. This way you can also check the accuracy of SBL's calculated port length. I'm looking forward to reading about your...

    Celestion Pulse XL 10.40 Cab

Going even lower on the tuning frequency will likely result in the low-end roll-off becoming more rounded in profile which will reduce the upper bass response (80 to 150 Hz) in exchange for increased low-bass response (20 to 40 Hz). I suggest modelling a variety of tuning frequencies to...

    ToneSpeak speakers?

I totally agree. Anthony Lucas has helped me several times over the years by answering my questions about driver identification and providing recommendations. @Matthijs I'd love to see something with a stronger mid/high voicing similar to the Eminence Deltalite II 2510. I'll be keeping an eye...

    ToneSpeak speakers?

I just read about their new bass guitar drivers a few days ago. Seems a few key people left Eminence to start up their own line of musical instrument speakers under Misco's corporate umbrella. I'd be curious to know whether they plan to expand their offerings for bass guitar beyond those...

    Love your amp(s) overdriven tone?

The muddiness of the clips I posted above was bothering me, so I re-recorded them. These are a clearer and sound more like what I hear in the room when played back through decent speakers or headphones.

    Love your amp(s) overdriven tone?

Yup, that one. Specifically the older one with the wacky EQ controls and no reverb. Here's two clips recorded with a mic just a few inches from the grill cloth. I can't say either one truly sounds like it does in the room, but they do represent the general tones.

    Love your amp(s) overdriven tone?

Greetings @pyrat56host and @Bag of Lazers, and other Quilter users! For the past year I've been using a Quilter 101 Mini Head through my sealed 2x10 cab to play bass at home and I love the driven tones without any pedals.

This is not a real SVT210AV speaker, right?

I'm not familiar with that cabinet or those drivers, but it is quite common for the cabinet manufacturer's name to not appear on the driver itself. This appears to be an Eminence driver, so I'd send those photos to Eminence's technical support email address on this page and ask them whether the...

Vox MV 50 for bass ?

Based on @Yahboy 's experience, and the fact that you buy a used one for 1/2 to 2/3 of the new retail price, I'd say give it a try. I have no experience with the Vox MV50s, but the sales history on Reverb shows about a half dozen sales per month, so you should be able to sell it again if you...

Funny, I sold mine to a buyer in Europe! I don't remember the exact amount, but I remember it was very expensive to ship. I agree with @rufus.K that the Rusty Box will give you the tones you want from the TS-50B in a much more flexible form.

Welcome to the forum! I used to have one, but sold it about a year and half ago. I'm not sure where you're located, but I saw a couple of listings on Facebook Marketplace. One with the matching TS-215 cabinet in Illinois, USA and a head-only in Indiana, USA. There may be others, but I didn't...

    32" Scale String Reccomendations

I have a custom gauge set of String Joy nickel rounds on my MIJ Squier P. They're on their website, just scroll about halfway down this page to find the medium scale options. I've had mine for a while and was initially impressed with the tone, but they did seem to become dull a little sooner...

Ashdown Studio 10 1x10" 60-Watt Bass Amp Combo

I've owned many of the current group of 1x10" combos including the Ampeg RB110 and the Ashdown Studio 10. I'll start by letting you know that I only play at home, always use a P bass, and always have at least a little (and often a little more) drive in my tone. Overall I preferred the sound of...
