Adding arm and belly cuts to a finished body

The current finish is a blonde poly, I’m not concerned with making it match at all. (If it came out like @2saddleslab’s up above I’d be 100% pleased)

Adding arm and belly cuts to a finished body

Given a slab body that is already finished, what’s a smart way for me to add arm and belly contours? I don’t want to do a total refinish, any new exposed wood will just get a coat of oil or shellac. Leaning toward using a rasp and files, I don’t currently have a belt sander or anything else...

    Can you believe this?

Is it any less legitimate to make a bass guitar from a guitar than it is to make it from planks of wood? At this price point I think it’s a bit unusual to be concerned about the provenance of the input materials.

leave clip-on tuner on while performing?

I feel like if your show is boring enough that people are scrutinizing your headstock to see if something’s clipped on, you have a more important problem to solve

Signature Bass Syndrome - Is Simply Idolatry?

That’s a bold and authoritative claim which probably would have been better worded as “I personally don’t consider the Les Paul to be a signature guitar, even though it is literally a guitar model designed by and for the musician whose signature is emblazoned on each and every headstock of that...

Need help with LaBella install on P-Bass please

I’m not sure how you could arrive at this answer. Lay a bass string from bridge to nut. Either the silk will be in a nut slot or not. Cutting additional length from the end of the string will have no bearing whatsoever on whether the silk is in the nut slot.

    Rubio Monocoat for bass bodies

So ~1.5ish years down the line, how does Rubio hold up as an instrument finish? I have a swamp ash body coming in, and I've been looking for a low VOC way to finish it, and I quite like the matte look of this finish. If my body comes sanded to 220, will I need to bring it down to 150 for proper...

Let's See some Double P Basses

That's great info, thanks! Very good point here as well! While there is a reverse-P mystique that interests me, might be best to stick with what I know (and minimize the number of "custom" routes) unless someone comes in and makes a very compelling argument

Let's See some Double P Basses

After going a long stretch of time with no P-bass pickups in my life, I have a bass with one and I'm starting to feel like if 1 is great, 2 might be amazing. So I'm thinking it might be time to assemble a parts bass. Warmoth only offers a P pup in the neck position on their forms, but pretty...

What is wrong with short scales.

Here’s something harder on a short scale bass: fretless intonation. A smaller movement of the finger leads to a bigger shift in pitch, which can make it difficult! (I am currently learning to play fretless, and I only have a short scale so I’m really doing it the hard way!)

The Official Bill Lawrence/Wilde Pickups Club

I’ve had a P46 laying around for about a year, finally popped it into a fretless Warmoth P I put together a few years ago. Wow. These pickups definitely don’t need help in the volume department! I had them cranked pretty low to keep them out of the way while getting things set up, expecting I’d...

Is that a really fortuitous shadow, or did he paint the side of the store like half of a guitar peghead?

Does playing rounds make you a better player?

That’s just it though, whatever brainpower you expend on trying to silence inherently noisy strings is brainpower unavailable for other things (including making good music).

NBD - 1969 Fender Jazz! (Should I refinish?)

I do actually like the look of clear over alder, and while we can see the join lines (I think), it looks pretty well matched. If it were me I’d just do it up in clear. Basically just making it a better done version of what it already has.

    SG & EB Bass Club

Almost! I’ve had a set of brushed chrome emg minihumbuckers floating around here. At some point this past week I looked back and forth between the bridge mini hum on my SG and the parts drawer and started looking at what it would take to keep the set together. It will require some modification...

Help me complete my super lightweight MJT Jazz build

You might consider attaching the strap at the headstock instead of the horn. Early fender basses came with a strap button on the back of the headstock, sometimes called a “hootenanny button.” I've considered doing this with a neck diver that I have, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I think...

Fret Buzz : acceptable or not?

I don’t know if I’ll call it “buzz”, but I like a bit of “sizzle” when I dig in. The note is always clear. I set up my guitars and basses this way.

    "Bite-sized" instructional materials?

I'm looking for a kind of instructional material, not sure if anything like it exists. I've read (and skimmed, and thumbed through) a number of bass books, and they usually seem to be quite broad and long and frequently assume that the reader is just starting out. I guess I'm looking for sort...

    SG & EB Bass Club

You know how Ernie Ball sells “slinky” strings? The jazz rounds actually live up to that name. They’re light, they’re smooth, they have a definite voice to them that I don’t hear out of other roundwounds I’ve tried. Granted, I’ve only played them for about an hour now, but that’s how I’d...

Always wanted an SG bass, finally got one! Came with TI Jazz Rounds installed (first time playing those, I'm more of a flat person). Surprised how bright this bass sounds even with the neck pickup soloed and the tone knob all the way down! E string is a bit weak, but I think that's because...

EMG J set -- neck pickup output too low to hear

Recently got a nice set of cream colored EMG J pickups off the classifieds and finally got around to setting them up.
