    Budget 2x10 cab comparison.

If you're prepared to put up with something as heavy as a Peavey Headliner 210 (28kg), you might consider a pair of old Trace Elliot 2103H cabs. Same weight as the Peavey, and have a horn.

    Trace Elliot dumb impedance question

Just because they were chunkier, locking, and looked more professional, I suppose. Plus you couldn't mistake the speaker cable for an instrument lead.

    Trace Elliot dumb impedance question

After you reiterated the "parallel" aspect I realised my question was even dumber than I thought. Of course two 8 ohm parallel resistances equal 4 ohms. If they were in series, they'd be 16 ohms. o_O I've always daisychained my two big 8 ohm cabs as Trace showed. From appearance I just...

Thanks @agedhorse. It looks that simple, but I thought it best to check in with a guru! 👍

    Trace Elliot dumb impedance question

I'm used to chaining two 8 ohm Trace cabs (a 4x10 and a 1x15) together in series to provide the amp (AH250) with a 4 ohm total, which provides maximum power from the amp's single output. For a smaller setup, I have a BLX130SM combo with a GP7 SM amp section and a single 10" speaker and want to...

    4x10 and 4x12

Back in the '80s I had a secondhand "guitar" cab, a HiWatt 4x12. It was in good condition and worked fine but I decided to sell it in order to purchase a proper bass cab, a Marshall JCM800 Bass Series. I hated it. It was soon jettisoned in favour of a Trace Elliot rig with a ported 1x15...

Stolen bass -- the most forlorn of forlorn hopes

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but for JIO, here's the range of WEM guitars in the mid-to-late '60s - the Rapiers and Sapphires. (A guinea in UK money is the current equivalent of US$1.32)

Stolen bass -- the most forlorn of forlorn hopes

JIO, your WEM looks great. The Rapier was the model below the Sapphire although I couldn't tell you what the difference was apart from the paint on the headstock. My original also had dot markers and Van Ghent tuners. I wish I could find a white body for mine - if it also had a neck I have spare...

Stolen bass -- the most forlorn of forlorn hopes

I've been lucky and have only had one bass stolen - and it was just the body and neck, stripped for a paint job. It was an old white '60s WEM Sapphire - not a great quality instrument, but it had sentimental value as it was the bass I used when my band supported The Clash back in '79. I still...

    Aria Basses

It doesn't look like any Pro Ⅱ I've ever seen, but the construction doesn't look bad. As MattZilla says, if it's cheap and plays well, it's a win! Perhaps somebody had one of these to use up...

What's the longest you've ever been in the same band?

33 years. Same drummer and singer/songwriter/guitarist. We all drifted off on separate projects over the years, but the band remained. Sadly that all ended three weeks ago when the singer/songwriter unexpectedly committed suicide. :crying:

    Who plays 40-95 set?

I used to use Rotosound Swing Bass 66 double ball end strings in 40-95. Now most of my basses are strung 45-105, with two or three with 40-100.

    Farida FJB-20 - NBD

The Farida has had its first outing in the studio and performed well. To me it sounds more like a Precision than a Jazz, but as long as it has presence and definition I don't need to pigeonhole it! Have a listen and see what you think (although our engineer often uses an Ampeg rack preamp, this...

    The worst relic job ever

I'm not really a fan of relic finishing, though some clever people can make it look authentic. I don't think you can class this one in that category, however. It has to be the worst relic job I ever saw. Yours for £286.62 (about US$365.00) at 4String Relic Finish Black Electric Precision...

    Farida FJB-20 - NBD

Thanks - yes, I think that lower horn is a little Jaguar-esque! The lower models in the range like the FJN-6 and FPB-8 were common, but despite the low pricing were still considered at least on a par with MIM Fender. The more expensive ones like the FPB-18 and FJB-20 were prized for their build...

    Farida FJB-20 - NBD

Few of you will be familiar with Farida but they used to build good quality basses (they now concentrate on very nice acoustic guitars). This was their flagship jazz bass, the '70s-style FJB-20. Swamp ash body, maple neck and fingerboard, handwound alnico pickups. Although it's unmarked, I think...

    Critique My New Band

Sounds good to me, and the bass has a nice audible top end. Our engineer tends to boost bottom end of my bass at the expense of middle and treble clarity, although it still seems to work. See if you agree:

    Music Man Sabre Slap Demo

I tried out a fellow bassist's Sabre in the early '90s. I'd auditioned several Stingrays in the past and wasn't really impressed, but the Sabre felt and sounded just right. I've never bought one, but the Sabre, together with the Riverhead Unicorn, remains on my "I Wish" list.

Where do I place master volume pot?

For one volume pot, yes, wire it as you just described. But you asked why Jazz basses are wired differently!
  26. smarthound

Where do I place master volume pot?

So that the volume controls on a two-pickup instrument are independent. If the pickups are wired to the outer lugs and the output comes from the middle, then fully turning down one pickup shuts off the other as well - not what's wanted on a Jazz.

    Can I change the action?

"bare with me" I don't think it'll help if I bare anything, but it really is simple to set up a bass. To check neck relief you just need a capo and a 10-thou or 12-thou feeler gauge. To adjust it you'll need the correct Allen key (or wrench/ screwdriver, depending on truss rod type). To change...

What compressor do you use, and why?

My compressors have all been humble compared to what I've read. I started with an Electro-Harmonix Soul Preacher - noisy, but great fun. Next came a Boss CL2, ruthlessly efficient; then a Boss CL-50 half-rack mount, which I never quite liked as much, as it was a compressor/limiter rather than a...

Bass Cabinet Speaker size and why?

I started with a ratty old Vox 15" speaker, then a no-name 15" in a ported bin. Next I got a HiWatt 4x12, which was great, but I foolishly sold it to get a Marshall JCM 4x12 bass cab which I hated. Then came the Trace Elliot 4x12 +1x15 fridge, and that's what I stuck with. These days I am...
