I was thinking something similar. Curious as to what is the difference that would make a defretted G&L difficult to set up vs a factory fretless. Might just be that they use a lot of shims from the factory for their fretless basses.

I worked through this and while the lower tension was nice, after a proper setup the stiffness is doable. I wasn’t able to lower the action at the bridge much because of buzzing but I did add a hair more tension to the truss rod and that helped a lot.

Haven’t done a full setup yet but I’ll be interested to see how low I can go. I may end up trying out down tuning, given the opportunity. I’ve never tried that before in any serious way.

I just (a few minutes ago) put a new set of M7200 on my jazz bass and WOW these things are STIFF! In retrospect I wish I would have gone for the lighter gauge ML7200. Really hope they loosen up with age.
