The musician of the 20th century?

If there are any classical music fans, YoYo Ma is extraordinary. I was fortunate to see him several times with the San Francisco Symphony both as a soloist and as part of small ensembles. He brought energy, joy and perfection every time.

The musician of the 20th century?

If it's composers, I've always loved Aaron Copland. I felt they should play "Fanfare for the Common" when I entered my office. Of course, it never happened. If it's performers, Miles Davis. But, there are so many that are extraordinary.

    The best fretless bass

I think it depends on what you want in a fretless. I wanted as much mwwwaaaa as I could get. I played a Santa Cruz fretless and it was terrific. I learned that Rob Allen had started his own shop with the same views on bass making. He was in Santa Barbara at the time and i had friends who lived...

Ethical question about a tree in my yard.

I've had to remove two trees - a California Oak and a Siberian Elm. Neither should have been planted in the first place and both became not only difficult, but also dangerous. Both cost a lot to remove and I did much of the "root" work on the Elm. Getting permits where I live made it also very...

    Short Scale Bass

I started with 30.5 on a Gibson EB-2 and have subsequently purchased a Gibson SG (30.5), American Mustang (30), Ken Smith 5 (34), Sadowsky NYC (34) and Rob Allen Fretless MB-2 (34). I think everyone hears a similar tonal difference - mostly E and G string related, but whether that's good, bad or...

    Bass Weight

My Gibson EB-2 is over 9 pounds and was lighter than the Fender P when I bought it in around '65. Even in my youth it felt heavy after a couple of sets and by the end of 4 my shoulder always hurt. Not was pretty, but the SG is much better for me now, unless I play seated (I'm old now).

What did you do with your "beginner" bass?

I still have my Gibson EB-2 from the 60s. Just bought a new (and wonderful) case for it from Cedar Creek Custom that cost more than the bass when I bought it. It's still a great bass and I only play my SG more often because I leave it out and it's lighter.

newbie to pedals not even sure what works well for bass

I bought a bunch of pedals, power supply, etc. and ultimately I'm not a fan and don't currently use them for bass, athough occasionally for guitar. I get much more satisfaction playing a different bass. Short scale, long scale, round wound, flat wound, fretted, fretless, ebony board, maple...

    Cedar Creek Guitar Cases

When I bought my Gibson EB-2 almost 60 years ago it was at the top of my budget. I wanted to buy the deluxe case, but just couldn't swing it. The cardboard case just hasn't lasted. The stitching, hinges, etc. barely work. I contacted Gibson about a new case and they recommended Cedar Creek...

Are you willing to eat jellied cranberry sauce? If so, what do you pair it with?

Ripples and all - we have it regularly with chicken (turkey is a lesser bird). It's what I grew up with, although my family always had the other, lumpy kind too. When I started cooking with Julia, made my own mayonaise and then went on to try to make my own ketcup to complete failure I realized...

Fender bass : what made you choose an MIA over an MIM or vice versa?

I've found the MIA Fenders to be more consistent and less likely to need upgrades (that can add up in cost and time). I also think they're more likely to retain value as they age. I also prefer buying things made here

Holly Grail of basses - Year of birth bass

What do you think about DNA/ancestry test kits?

I think they're wonderful. Both my sister and my niece went to Ancestry.Com. I now know more about my ancestry and my niece found a full cousin. Turned out to be a son I never knew I had. Among the best things that ever happened to me. Unless your DNA is associated with a crime, I'd say - do...

Dream Amp - Which one and Why?

The Bergantino Forte HP2. Played through a GK 410, but I'd like to hear 12s and 15s... I loved my old Dual Showman, but the weight, power consumption and tube replacement (and keeping them in tight too) make it a thing of the past for me.

when shopping, do you care how popular something is?

Popular with who? Berganito amps are popular with a lot of working bassists. That made my decision to buy their amp easier and indicated the resell value would be high - (I'm old) - a matter of consideration. I'm sure there is some "independent" spirit that swears the Yugo was a great car, just...

12-string guitars not as popular as they used to be?

    Best and Worst Performances

Joni was at the same concert in San Jose in the mid-90s as Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. Three artists I'd always liked, so I scored front row tickets. They were each truly awful. I think most of Van's vocals were from a guy in back with a mike and no lights. Dylan was monotonous and unskilled...

Best lightweight combo amp under 35 pounds

I recently heard a Markbass - amp and speaker - at a local concert and it sounded great. Years ago Abe Laboriel used a GK 112 and it was excellent. If I had the money, I'd opt for a Bergantino Head (6 pounds) and their 12 w/ tweeter (29 pounds).

Which bass are you actually considering buying, even though you shouldn't?

I want a Rob Allen fretless Mouse. I love my MB-2, but find a short scale (30) easier on my old hands. Probably won't happen since the MB-2 is so light and wonderful and mice aren't readily available. And expensive when they are.

Happy Belated Birthday to Abraham Laboriel!

I met Abe at a NAMM show about 20 years ago when he played at Orlando Wind Instrument's booth. Orlando was a friend and we all went out to lunch together. Abe is just as nice a guy as he is a great player, although at a month younger than me we're not too old to stop playing and never will be!
