Bassists Who Were Guitar Players First

I have noticed that many of the great bass players were initially guitarists. Is this true? I wonder why that is? Which of your favorite bassists were guitarists before? Do you think that being a guitarist first primes you to be a better bass player? Any/all input is appreciated!

I eventually figured out why guitarists are always so loud

I've been playing bass since the mid-eighties and I have always played a bit of acoustic guitar on the side. Lately, I've gotten more into electric guitar and was on the market for an all tube amp. Let's be honest, I played bass with countless guitarists and never heard a decent guitar tone...

which is easier as a bass player: rhythm or lead guitar?

the other day i was able to sit down with an acoustic guitar and a pick, and i just started doing a thing in a minor. and i don’t know what really constitutes “lead guitar”, but what i was doing on there was definitely not rhythm guitar. apart from not having any muscle memory of picking between...

    Jazz for blues guitarists

Hey gang, Today I went to my local jazz jam. We had a new kid come in for his second jam with us. He's really quite good, has an ear for music, but can't read charts and doesn't know any standards. He's kind of at the wrong jam for what he wants to play. That's not to say he's not welcome, but...

    Guitarists and the volume war

I play in a cover band and we play small bars and clubs. We have a PA we set up on-site and a sound guy who is pretty good. I put my Genz Benz 9.0 into two vertically stacked 2x10s and leave the volume about 40% and never have a problem hearing myself or cutting through the mix. My setup can be...

    Bassists as influential as guitarists?

So, I had this stupid discussion with our guitarist; in my opinion bassists have been as influential in jazz/fusion as guitar players since the 60's. Even as band leaders. What do you guys think? And what bassists would you point out?

Found my guitarists main guitar in a pawn shop

I've been jamming a little with this guitarist for a few months on and off. We have been searching for a "non-flakey" drummer since Christmas and haven't found one. The guitarist plays some very well versed blues and knows his way around the fretboard. I haven't spoken directly with him in a...

Do Bassists who start out as Guitarists prefer 6- or 5- or 4-string basses?

The 5/4 string preference convo made me start thinking about this... I started out as a guitarist, and selected a 5-string bass as my first...just felt better. Wondering how many did the same thing?? Or preferred a 6 or the 4?? and Why?? Although I often wonder, "If a 6-string had been...

    Playing with really good guitarists

Bear with me here... Last summer I stumbled into a project with some players who were very successful in the 80's, playing with and writing grammy nominated gold-record songs for a who's-who of talent in what would now be considered Classic Rock. There are even MTV videos. Pros and Tone: In...

How common are these kinds of guitarists?

I recently had a guitarist tell me that a bassist I like is dog****, and the reason he provided is a reference to a song where he plays out of key on a chord that he thought was "Gadd9". Well G# is actually in key, and the guitar chord is just a power chord with a 2nd on top... aka Gsus2. It...

Do your guitarists mic their own amps?

I feel like I have it easy with bass. I have a 50 ft XLR cable that I can plug into my amp head and run to the mixer. Most of the time, there's a cable ready for me. I've never had a sound guy refuse to run me direct or try to mic my cab. Guitarists, on the other hand, usually need to run a...

When guitarists think they know the correct notes for ya

So, got to jam with some old friends who are thinking there's a market for a wedding/corp band. Guitar player says we should get together to see if we can put a decent list together, so we did 2 weeks ago. Someone suggested "Just The Way You Are", Billy Joel. I said that's cool; I played that...

Is this a thing: bassists and bass guitarists?

Hello all This thread is inspired by a comment made by John Entwistle in a up coming documentary about him. In the clip I saw he said, to paraphrase, that he never considered himself a 'bassist' but, instead, a 'bass guitarist.' I have only recently picked up the bass again, and thought of...

"Bass is not played that way" ?!

Hey all, so I was playing a 16th note riff on the higher frets of the G and D string, then the guitarist comes to me and says: "man, bass is not played that way". I was so upset that there was someone making rules for an instrument haha. Have you experienced this as well, that someone said...
