12 year old know it all!...Not!

Or act it.

Has it ever occurred to any of the trolls that this kid definitely spoke out if turn to an adult and is an insolent brat who needs some old fashioned discipline upon the backside?. When my son was 12, had he ever...and I mean EVER, mouthed off to an adult...any adult, with some smug sense of whatever, his punishment would have been swift. Little kids, and yes 12 is still a little kid, should never mouth off to adults...especially strangers.
OP, I'm one of the few who enjoyed your tale and I hope you did feel better...sincerely.

When I was 12, which was around 1937, if a child spoke at all, we just went ahead and shot 'em. That's why I didn't speak until I was 27, and then I got most a the words wrong. Back then, children worked in coal mines, and gave their parents all their money, and were danged grateful to do it! Most of my friends died from black lung by the age a 15! We needs ta bring back them times! People was happier in those days, even if they didn't know it!

I am certainly not justifying the OP's response, but I can certainly see where it may have come from. Our society has gone so far down the "Everyone Gets A Trophy" path that kids today feel so entitled and treated like they are all way above average. I am 56 years old my self and by being exposed to a lot of kids as a result of my son activities through the years I have met my share of kids just like the youngster the OP encountered. "Mommy and Daddy say I am special and better than everyone else so I will take it upon myself to ensure I let everyone that I meet know it!" Then when he encounters an adult who expects to see just a little respect extended to an elder, our Little Prince has to have Daddy step in and defend him. It is becoming more and more pervasive in our society for children and teens to be rude and disrespectful to adults. Some of it can be chalked up to the fact that our culture—movies, music, internet sites and television—often glorifies disrespectful, crude or even cruel behavior. Mommy and Daddy help to encourage it. I really think that the negative responses directed towards to OP are a little harsh. Just like someone posted earlier - how did all of you make it through childhood in such a cruel, cruel world?

When I was 12 years old, I coulda thrown better, hit harder, and got more girls than you could at any point in your life. Not only that, but the law was on my side!

I don't understand why we had to go down the road of "obesity epidemic in America" and what causes it.

That's a complex issue and none of us here are going to be able to solve it.

However, we might be able to give the OP or anyone else here that might be insecure by the bragging of a 12 year old some tips on how to handle things more maturely.
Not knowing how the kid actually came across, I can't offer any advice other than the generic "avoid confrontation with kids" one.

I've run a lot of races over the years (5K, etc.) and am by no means a great runner, but I never come in last either. In almost every race I've run, invariably, as I get within about 50 yards of the finish line, some 10 or 12 year old kid pulls up along side and then starts to get ahead of me dashing for the finish line. I always have the same thought: "Hmmm, if I do nothing someone's gonna say 'look at that kid beating that geezer,' but if I try to pick up the pace and beat the kid someone's gonna say 'Look at that pitiful adult whose self esteem is so bad he feels the need to beat a child across the finish line.'" I always let the kid win, because you know why? It doesn't matter.

Haha, no way! I kick those little brats down! When they hit 14 or 15 they'll be so far ahead of me that we may as well not be in the same race!

I'm happy to say I'm not so insecure that I can't tolerate 12-year-olds communicating to me as in equal. In fact, I rather like it when kids feel comfortable enough around me to not feel they have to be seen and not heard.

Hell I always talk to kids like they are equals when they are mature enough to talk and act like equals themselves. I don't pull rank as an adult unless it's absolutely necessary and someone's about to get hurt if things keep getting out of hand. How else do you expect a kid to learn to treat others with respect unless you give it to them too so they know what it feels like?

Also, Sometimes if you don't have your own head shoved up your own ego you would be surprised what you can learn from a 12 year old.

You never answered the question...would you be proud of your son to do that... Do you even have kids???

Really not worth responding to at this point. But I will indulge. No, I would likely not be proud. I would more likely be embarrassed. I would then try my best to deal with the situation as a responsible adult and parent.

Afterwards I would have a conversation with my son about manners, boundaries, etc... so far as a 12 year old can understand.

I would not smack my son for that. OTOH, if some "disrespected elder" feels the need to smack my kid, or even just demeans him, said elder will have to deal with me.

If that's too 'soft' for you, then whatever. Rest assured my kids won't bother you anytime soon. I keep them away from abusive adults.

When I was 12 years old, my father used to murder me in my sleep about once a month. After I had died 73 or 74 times, it got to the point where I couldn't even squeeze out a ghost anymore. In those days, parents would give their children a case of the whooping cough, or black plague, just so's the kids would know they had to mind, and God help 'em if they were ever late to supper, after 16 hours toiling in the fields! I remember me and all my little friends fought the Nazis off singlehandedly when they tried to overtake our town. The grownups just sat by and laughed and ate sandwiches while all of us were being hit by machine gun fire, and blowing up from mortar shells. Back then, if you had a arm blowed off, they'd just sew another one on, and send you right back out there! It got to the point where I had two left arms, and one a my feet was a size 16. Really made shoe shopping hard, I guess, but back then we almost never had any shoes anyway. We'd just nail sandpaper to our feet, and pour turpentine on it.

Just regarding that part of your post:

My wife is big sister to a girl (12 yo) here who is living with her grandmother who is pretty helpless. Her mom is around but is currently getting surgery on her arms to reduce the effect of using them as pincushions. Interestingly, the girl has no weight issues. She's not very intelligent and very small for her age (due to how her mother took care of herself while pregnant) but she's at least trying to learn, she's a cute kid and she is very salvageable. She has her eyes wide open regarding her mom and her lifestyle.

There is another girl (15 YO) from our church that we tried to "take in" as a friend, but she is so obnoxious that it is making it difficult to even try to help her. She is fat, constantly hungry, and will not eat anything healthy we put in front of her. And no amount of encouragement or positive talk works on ANY subject. It's like talking to a bag of raw narcissism. She is utterly oblivious to any attempted teaching of any kind. It's like trying to talk rocket science to a two year old. We've decided to apply our efforts elsewhere.

The sad thing about the 15 year old is that she is a walking caricature of the multi-generation welfare recipient mentality. The idea of actually aspiring to earn your own living is so foreign to her that she can't grasp the concept. EVERYTHING is about how to simply "get stuff" from the government and other people. It permeates everything about her world. Here is just how derailed her family is:

She claims she was sexually abused multiple times several years ago by her mother's ex boyfriend. That man has re-entered the picture and he says he's really sorry and he's changed. He now lives in Texas. So, mom has decided to move to Texas with him, but she can't yet. So she wants this girl to move there first and live there for a couple months while mom gets things in order in KY before she moves. Seriously? Yes, seriously.

How do you fix that kind of stupid? And that is what it is. It is not ignorance. It is raw, unadulterated, in your face stupidity.

There is some very messed up stuff going on around here. It's like another species.

I've heard of the food insecurity issue, but not read much about it yet.

This may come across as nitpicky, but, I feel your choice of the word salvageable is rather distasteful. Sounds like you're talking about an object, like you picked up a beater guitar off CL to refinish. I also find your assumptions about the lack character of poor people to be concerning.
