^ Great advice on how to raise a cow bell loving, ex-patriate
liberal commie pinko Nazi fascist that wears Santa suits and smells like pickles, red cabbage, sardines and Vodka. ;)

I love you, man :p :ninja:

I think you mean 'Icelanders :rollno:'.

Any particular brand of bananas that you find are best for
dealing with 'total anger and yelling and freaking out'?

um no curfews. don't be a frickin' nazi loser.

let your kid go out and smoke weed and hang with friends. don't be a loser parent. why do you want to hurt him?

you guys are talking about 17 and 18 year olds here... let them make their own decisions. they aren't your little babies anymore.

I'm guessing you are not a parent. I'm guessing you're about 14 years old.
Nazi Loser?
Are you kidding me?

Something like curfew is a great decision-making task for a kid the age of your son.

I don't think 11:00 is unreasonable either way. However, there are going to be times really soon for him that 11:00 isn't going to work. Movies that start at 9:30 and maybe something to eat afterwards can turn into 12:30 or 1am somtimes.

What I would say to your 17 year old is this: Curfew is 11:00 as a rule but with exceptions. If he follows the general rule of 11:00, when a situation like the movie example comes up, simply ask him, 'when will you be home.' If he says 12:30, he deserves a chance to behave accordingly, stick to his word and be home by 12:30.

Being home at the agreed upon time means next time an 'exception to curfew' is warranted, your son should be trusted to do the same.

At the same time, you have to make it clear that 11:00 (if this is what you expect) is STILL the normal curfew and must also be respected by your son.

When kids have a say in what happens, they are much more likely to stick to the agreement. When they don't, they might need more time to handle the responsibility.

Just so you know, between my wife and me, we have two college freshmen, (boy/girl) a 21 year old daughter and a 14-year old son. Only the 14 y.o. still thinks we're stupid!!!

Dave, I would say that you have paid your dues in 'Stupidville'
though, for sure,!

Very well put, btw.

I'm not sure if this should be a poll or not but I have a question.
My son will be 17 in March. He currently has to be in the house on weekends by 11pm. At this age should he be allowed out later or am I doing right?

If you are around this age what time do you have to be in?

If you are the parent of a kid this age what is the latest you allow?

I'm 17. If I have a ride home, I can be in aroud 1:00, without too much of a hassle.

If I have the car for the night, 12:30, unless I'm driving friends home, I can be later, as long as everyone get's home (It's cold up here)

If I walk, 12:00.

I think it's fair to let the teen be responsible for themsleves, and show that they can be reasonable. If you imply strict rules right off the bat, good luck, they'll stay out later, come home drunk, and yea. (Just out fo spite) as soon as I was told "Okay, so what you will, just be reasonable about it" I came home at reasonable times, let my parents know where I was going, instead of just walking out at random, and yea.

strict rules don't work, they just make us teens more spiteful. Relax a little, and we will too. Be reasonable, and we'll be reasonable. That's how it works for me.

EDiT: If I'm out to watch a movie or something, and it only starts at 10:45, as long as my parents know where I am, I can be home 1, or 2 am, no problem.....just I can't do that too often.

and for parties? if they know there is drinking, they just want me home whenever I can find my way back home :p They ain't pickin' me up, I'll get home at 4 sometimes. Make sure your kid has a housekey.

I feel you man. Like I said my son doesn't think that 11 is a bad deal but would just like to stay out later sometimes. My fear is that he would ask everytime.:D
I did go through the same thing when I was his age. My dad was an FBI agent and was very strict. As a matter of fact, one of my good friends at the time called him a nazi.:D

After reading all of these posts I am seriously considering letting him stay out later. That is why I asked in the first place. He is a really good kid.

That's good. I'm not saying that all kids are bad, but everyone is bound to have a few nights where it's just all-out stupid fun. Don't worry, Everyone has some nights like this. Just keep an eye on him, that's all. Don't be alarmed if he comes home drunk at least a few times, it's part of being a teenager. One thing that teens hate is parents that are overcontrolling.

You sounds like a great parent, keep it up :)
