2 Notes Opus

Opus vs Element

I get the at these are apples and oranges, but still fruit.

I currently use an element, and I’m not really happy with the cabis sounds. But I do use it for an audio interface and wireless Bluetooth audio in, for practice.

I’m interested in others experience with these 2 pedals and is there a clear winner for what matters most, the sound.

looking at you @Derek Williams because I think you’ve had both.

Not quite an apples-to-apples comparison (keeping your analogy alive!), since I have a Torpedo rather than Opus, but my opinion is that it's sonically superior to the Element. The variety of the cab sim/IR's on offer feels much more varied than what you get on the Element, plus you can make and load your own IR's if you want. Didn't try the DG editing suite (played through a friend's Element), so can't comment on it, but the Two Notes editor offers a lot of flexibility for shaping sounds.

I was hoping the Opus would have all the features that the Element has (and Two Notes kinda hinted it would), but unfortunately it requires an external audio interface. That's one of the things I really like about the Element: I can quickly record both myself and a backing track all in sync without any extra work. I don't believe the Opus supports bluetooth audio in either.
Without even trying the Opus, I would still give it the win for quality of effects, but that isn't as important if you are going to use it as a practice tool. The extra features of the Element gives it the win there.

My Opus has developed a really weird bug.

If I set it to Instrument input it goes haywire. Really loud static/buzzing through the DI. The VU meters for IN and OUT basically peak. Even if I unplug the XLR it continues. I haven't tried to see if it happens through the output as well but I assume it does as the bug is inside the unit and not the DI port itself.

If I set it to Line it is fine so I have just done that and boosted the volume to compensate.

Has anybody else had this? It was working fine then suddenly not.

Hi @Plastalmonus,

Hope you're well and sorry to hear you're having this issue! Please get in touch with our Helpdesk and one of our specialists can have a deeper look in to this: https://helpdesk.two-notes.com/

I got a €10 bluetooth adapter to plug into the aux in of the opus. Works great!

I have a question about loading IRs (not the dynIRs which are amazing)

If i load a 3rd party IR would i turn off the miking option? I dont know much about IRs but isn't part of the "model" the mic used?

By leaving miking on am i losing the "natural" sound of the IR because it's double mic'd?

Hi @lidl e,

Thanks so much for your post! There are no mic'ing options with Static IR Files - the mic'ing is only included with DynIRs due to the manner in which we capture them. Let us know if you have any further questions!

Thanks, Amy.

Loving the dynIRs but just checking iut some options.

I am new to IRs so i might be totally incorrect!

So if i load this static IR, i can see Mics and there is a miking option.

Am i being dim? See below. I loaded an IR and it shows me two mics. What is this representing? Also have the miking option available when IR is loaded (see second pic)

Thanks!!

Hi @lidl e

Thanks for coming back to me! So the mixer below is simply for volume, phase, mute control etc. You can mute the second IR (default) in the mixer as well!

Ah! I tgink i have it now. I thought the static IRs that come on the Opus were mic sims and i was loading my IR

I see now this list are IRs, not mic sims And i loaded one but then changed it to an preloaded one. I though i was micing yhe IR, but it all makes sense now

Thanks so much. Will keep digging and researching!

Sorry! Last post on this i think.

So i got my static IRs loaded. I had to use torpedo remote on my laptop connected via USB. I couldn't load them off of my phone using the torpedo android app over Bluetooth. I kept getting errors.

Is this expected behaviour? Can you inly load static IRs using the IR manager in the desktop app? It seems like the facility is there to load them on android iver vluetooth, but it isnt working for me

Desktop app using USB cable worked though

I’m looking for a used OPUS for just over $200. Not really in my favor because that are few and far between. Will throw in a Darkglass element for a trade offset.

Maybe Two-notes can do a trade in your Element for an opus discount promotion.

Just found the full manual. This isexpected behaviour. You can only add static IRs through the desktop app.

Also all the included static IRs are acoustic guitar samples. I suppose that makes sense around your business model

Thanks, Amy. @AmyTwonotes

Hi @lidl e,

Yes you are indeed correct - if you want to add additional DynIRs/IR's you would need to hardwire connect to your computer. Once they are loaded, you can use the app on your phone to edit the EQ etc. Let us know if you need anything else!

Following on from the above discussion, I've been looking for a cab sim pedal which I can use both for silent practice at home, the occasional jam with friends and for playing without an amp at church- DI to sound desk and with IM's. I don't need it for recording. I don't really want to spend more than £300. My priorities are getting the best sound quality I can and having a good range of different tones to choose from.
So far I've narrowed it down to either the Darkglass Element or Two notes Opus. I already own a DG b7k but not really used it much so far, as it doesn't sound great with my little Line 6 modelling amp.

I'm erring towards the Opus, as it seems to have more options for tweaking the sound, possibly a bigger range of amp/cab sims and it's a newer product- so perhaps better sound quality? But on the downside, a lot of it is more guitar focused.
On the other hand I like that the Darkglass is more focused on bass + maybe will work better with the b7k? It's difficult to compare the options in terms of sims, as there is no list for the element.

If anyone has any further thoughts on the best choice between the two, I would be grateful.

I love my element! I'm going to add an OPUS to A/B

For me, the Element has 2 things the OPUS does not have, BT Audio In from my mobile device, and audio interface out with split tracks, 1 for the bass signal and the second for the BT audio/aux input. I don't really use the audio interface out. But the BT audio in is golden.

Thanks, good to know you like the Element. Bluetooth would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
Roughly how many cab/amp sims would you say are there available for it?
And is it good for clean tones, as well as distortion?

I don't use it for distortion. If you want the whole package I would suggest a DG infinity. I had one and sold it because I ran out of room on my board and I bought a CAPO. I do miss the 3 channels of DG dirt and grind, they really were the best.

There is a single pre-amp section on the element, honestly it's underwhelming and I don't use it.

There are stock and artist series cab sims in the DG, probably about 20 off the top of my head and up to 10 IR's, some with multi-positions and 45 degree offsets. There are 5 presets to slot all these into. I do not yet have an OPUS, however all the options seem much more robust on the OPUS and I'm willing to bet, the end result probably sounds better.

Is it "better" enough to justify the additional cost. YMMV. For me the element does what I need it to do, that being said, the OPUS will also do what I need it to do, however I'm always hunting for that 10/tenths.
