2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

A curious start to the season indeed. The Sabres beat Detroit in a shootout for the first time in five years, the defending Stanley Cup champs have been playing like an AHL team, and the NHL is handing out suspensions and fines almost daily.

Difficult win in OT last night for the B's against the tight defense of Florida. Marchant continues to get chances and he buried the gamewinner. Tough game to watch (the Globe described it as a drag race between two garbage trucks) as there were not that many chances for either team and Luongo played well for FLA. Thankfully no fights as it was Shawn Thorton's return to Boston.

Where to start with the Pens......until Minnesota scored their single goal in the Tuesday game, the Pens had scored 18 unanswered goals, tying them for the longest run since Phoenix in 2000-01. Then you have the third line continuing to produce numbers, then you have Malkin who has scored a point in every game for the Pens so far this season, then you have the power play which continues to impress. It's a nice run for the Pens and their fans right now.

Kings have to play better than they did in Dallas. Granted, they won the game, but man, it took them until the 2nd period to get their heads straight. The return of Gaborik and Kopitar did spark something in the Kings, but they HAVE to play better. They HAVE to control the game from the start. Ugly road trip, but thank God they ended it with a win...hope it doesn't happen again.

Canucks are looking good. Bonino is looking like a right move to replace whiny Kesler on the second line. Still too early to say, but he and Higgins seem to be clicking well. Their defense is questionable, though, with the likes of Bieksa and Edler manning the blue line. Edler can't defend for crap and Bieksa can't handle the puck. They really need a d-man who can really unload the puck Weber-style.

Doesn't Bonino have more goals than Kessler right now too?

At this point, I don't think many Pen's fans are upset about the James Neal trade considering how Hornqvist and Spaling are playing. We'll see though. It's only 10 or so games into the season.

The rebuilding Flames are off to a great start this year, admittedly the same as they started last year. They might still falter as the season progresses, but so far it looks like the rebuild is coming along with Johnny Gaudreau playing like a potential rookie of the year and the Brodie/Giordano combo arguably "the best defensive pairing in the league right now" - Kelly Hrudy. The Calgary D is # 1 for goals scored in the league currently. I hope they can get some small measure of revenge against The Lightening who stole the cup from them on a blown call game 6 of the final in 2004 (last year The Flames made the playoffs). 8 - 4 so far, looking great on the road. They handed the Canadiens their 1st loss on home ice earlier in the current trip then squeaked by The Caps on their next game in OT.

I wasn't able to see any NHL games Thursday night, but I see the Pens keep rolling along. A shootout win in Winnipeg. Boston and Philly keep right on winning too, and the Blues rack up #7 in a row.

PED abuse rears it's ugly head in the NHL with Carter Ashton of Toronto getting a 20 game suspension for using them.

I called my cable company to lodge a complaint and plan to do so every other day.

I live in Northeast PA. About 90 minutes from Philly or 90 minutes from NYC. The local cable carrier (RCN) has both Comcast Sports (Flyers) and recently added MSG (Rangers).

They also offer the Center Ice package for a couple hundy for the season.

I will set up my DVR to save to Rangers games, but then I get a record error because the game is blacked out and they will put on bull riding or some other crap. So I'll check and see that the game is carried on Center Ice, but I'd have to pay to see it.

Then, pissed off, I'll flip channels and invariable see that they are still carrying the Flyers game on Comcast even though that's on Center Ice too.

I called them to complain and asked why they give us MSG but block the Rangers games to get us to pay for Center Ice, but they don't do that for the Flyers broadcasts. If they did, they would get more people to pay for Center Ice in the area (theoretically anyway because Philadelphia fans are notorious bandwagon jumpers). So I guess Comcast has some agreement to keep the broadcasts free or their "fans" would disappear and forget hockey even exists.

She said she would file my complaint. I told her I will keep calling until they either stop blocking MSG when the games are on, or start blocking Comcast when the flyers are on.

Maybe you shouldn't have complained. Now they'll probably start blacking out the Flyers games too and you'll be left with nothing! (Sorry. Just thinking that that would be my luck.) ;)

Here in Memphis, the only way I can see hockey is with the Center Ice package, unless it's on NBC or the NHL Network. So I've been getting Center Ice for quite a few years now.

I like what I see from the Sens this year so far.

They have a pretty good youngster trio ( Hoffman , Lazar , Stone ) wich seems to be generalized across the league too.

They don't look much on paper , only have two "stars" but they play real good as a team this part of the season.
If only they could keep this to that level…..

Looks like I cursed them - they lose 5-2 but still put out a good effort. Couple of other young guns that are looking good this early - Monahan seems to have found his touch again showing this with scoring the OT goal against the Caps and getting another one last night. New center Jooris had 2 goals in their win in Montreal and assisted Monahan on his OT goal in DC. I hope they renew Hartley's contract as he seems to be a great fit coaching these guys. Feester picked him before his exit as GM. I had serious doubts about replacing him with Burke who left the Leafs who haven't exactly been lighting it up under his tutelage the last few years. Seems to be working good so far. I think that there'll finally be good things in the future (hopefully playoffs this year!) for these guys.

B's had two goals disallowed due to quick whistles, but still managed a win with a strong 3rd period.

B's are 5-1 since losing Chara - better than I had hoped especially since there have been some games in those 6 where they have been without Krug and/or Krejci. The young D and the rest of the team have worked hard to pick up the slack. I'm a little concerned about the minutes that Hamilton, Seidenberg and McQuade have logged, but the experience that Morrow and Trotman are give the Bruins some depth at D.

I just noticed that all four regular season matchups with Montreal are the second of a back-to-back for the B's. :eyebrow: Coincidence or conspiracy - you decide.
To be fair to the C's - one of those games is the second of a back-to-back for them too.
