3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Yeah until I see a consistent trend of normalcy I put 3 leaf in the same arena as Dr. Bass, unfortunately.
The situation about the knobs and preamp is unfortunate for sure and it's a valid warning to everyone as Spencer hasn't been on the ball for a while but I would pump the brakes on comparing him to a serial fraudster who actively stole money from a such a vast number of customers, some who waited decades for their money back or their cab, some who never got anything. Spencer isn't taking preoders for a bunch of pedals and not delivering, to the best of my knowledge at least. But he's been MIA for quite a bit now, sold like 2 batches of pedals in December and posted the last update and that's been it lately.

Folks who look at 3Leaf's website should be aware indeed. But Dr Bass has one of the worst history of stealing from musicians that we've seen here on TB and Spencer is not even remotely close to that realm.

I gotta at least agree that he’s not the safest guy to send your money to. I was leery when I purchased B-stock stuff from him in December. I don’t think his aim is to rip people off, but it also sounds like some people who dealt with him clearly feel like they were ripped off, so take that for what it’s worth.

Still an absolutely ridiculous price...

Even if spencer releases new stuff prices won't go down. I had a MKIII and as PWNZOR a year ago...Oh well.

I agree that’s it’s a bit high from what we were used to a few years back. For instance, I had an MK1 and sold it for $175, 4-5 years ago, and thought I got a good deal. But “ridiculous” is more along the lines of expecting $800 for that same MK1. At least right now it is, in my opinion. Thats not to say that in 5 or 10 years, it wouldn’t be considered a reasonable price.

Only the absolute right trade would get me to ship off my MKII. The farther spaced sub switch is crucial for me personally. As nice as it is to have compact pedals, I will make room for an MKII and plan around it on my boards. I hope Spencer revisits a similar size layout if production gets back to full swing.

I have an octabvre mkII, a mini, & an mkIII... prices are crazy now but just imagine what they could be in 5-10 years...
Five years from now I'm willing to bet it will be back to normal. As more, possibly better, octaves will have come out, and the uncertainty of this brand will be more clear, in either direction, I couldn't see these prices staying. They're very good pedals, but alot of this pricing is coming from fear of what's next, or not next.

Don't buy (literally) into the hype, go get a nice OC2 at a fraction of the cost and ride it out.

I dunno, alot of discontinued pedals retain high prices regardless of whether or not something 'better' has come along... perhaps for the sake of novelty or scarcity. Even the early production Japanese OC-2 Octavers can be be upwards of $300 depending on condition.

And most don’t.

I took a break from music for 10 years and when I came back to the forums 90% of the hyped pedals from then were absent from current boards. Everyone was on to new offerings, there were far fewer options back then. The things that did retain or increase in value were the ugly ducklings (hello, Black Russian big muffs). The increase was in things that were ubiquitous and ignored and now more rare or hard to come by. I mean, Digitech is having a moment right now.

There might be a place for these to collectors but that’s the niche of a niche. It’s a bit irrelevant to me as there’s no way I’d pay current prices but it feels like a gamble to me to buy an octave at such an inflated prices when other options can get you 90% of the way there.

Also, 10 years is light years at this point even with with something relatively low-tech like pedals.

There’s an Enabler on Reverb for a not totally crazy price in this market (c. $440, I think, although I’m having to convert from British pounds). It’s in France though so may not show up on the site unless you change your filters (depending where you are). Even after import fees and delivery it may be worth it to someone; the Enabler is such a good pedal.

Edit: Not affiliated.

Back in the chain, can't decide if I like it more than the mkiii or not. They both have their strengths.

GR2 owners: does the FX loop work like it does in the later filters, where you don't have to have the filter engaged to have access to whatever is in the loop? I know the v1 Wonderlove has an internal switch to set this, and the Chromatron has an external switch.

Also . . . Anyone got a Chromatron or GR2 they'd consider getting rid of?

You can trigger the envelope differently by which input you use, input or return, but no, there is not an internal switch like the Chromatron exterior switch. Everything engaged within loop will not be heard when the GR2 is disengaged

Both pedals are very nice, good luck!

Hmm, that's not how my GR2 works. When I set one of the internal switches to "buffered", I'm pretty sure the signal goes through the loop even when the GR2 is off.

Yeah, I too was on a hiatus for a bit, came back about 4 years ago to find this new world of gears. There was all these unobtainable models everyone went crazy over, every one of those now sit in the classifieds for at least a week, below what they sold at. Now would be a really good time for some new analog fuzz and octave to come out, work around these shortages (I know this applies more over at IE)

Yes you're correct, I didn't use my loop when I had mine, and read over over the manual thinking its for the switch type. Makes me want another gr2 even more.. you would think he would note that under fx loop where it's relevant

These are circuits...anyone can build them or hire someone to build them. A TON of the crazy expensive stuff even is already traced out and some even have ready to order PCBs available online. Call it "mojo" call it pog-like collectibility, but much like getting the exact same ice cream out of the freezer vs the ice cream mean, it just isn't the same.

Sure, there are plenty of people who would love a clone of the latest / greatest unobtanium, but the originals carry their price for more than just the sounds they produce. It's just the nature of the waves of collectability.
