Yeah...it's a one man show (w potential help from a girlfriend). But since this is clearly not the main source of income it is not the priority...a side hustle if you will.

Finally duplicated that nasty Mu-tron iii w/ dying battery sound on Sir Psycho Sexy using the Chromatron w/ the Doom 2 in the fx loop.
BSSM is the album that inspired me to play bass & I've been trying to get this sound for some time... I'm really excited right now.
The Chromatron has been difficult for me to dial in & I've found myself tweaking knobs every time I turn it on without ever being quite satisfied but this setting works really well for me & sounds equally excellent in both the up & down positions. The Octabvre, Doom 2, & Chromatron in down sweep mode makes for a great subtractive synth bass tone.
3 leaf pedals really are exquisite devices & worth every penny. I hope Spencer keeps making these brilliant little boxes.

Hey all, I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but I was wondering.... How do the Doom2 and Proton (alone and in combination) compare to the Chunk Systems Brown Dog and Agent 00 Funk?
I don't hear much about the Chunk systems pedals, is there a good reason for that?

I haven’t tried the Doom2/Proton combo but have had an OG BD and currently have good quality clones of both the BD and 00Funk. Chunk Systems went out of business some time ago but I think are still highly regarded and sought after, just a bit old school in their design/size and not many of them around.
You can use the BD and 00Funk in series, like a regular fuzz/filter combo, but they also have a separate envelope connection, which I believe feeds a phase inverted version of your clean signal from the BD to the 00Funk. This means your clean signal controls how much the filter opens before it hits the fuzz. To my ears this makes it the most touch sensitive and thick/squelchy fuzz/filter combo I've tried. Maybe a bit similar to something like the West Co. Grease Juicer, or using a fuzz in the loop of an envelope filter like the Chromatron.
A set of chunk system pedals sold on reverb a couple of weeks ago at $250 per pedal. I placed them on my watch list, but both sold a few hours later.
I put the Anima Red in a Dingwall NG3. I really like it. Modern without being cold or sterile, it's a big, clear sound, and the EQ frequencies feel really useful and powerful. I definitely recommend it!
Also, I'm ISO a Pike Vulcan XL, hit me up if you have one and are looking for a Broughton FFXL or Scorpion.
I'll probably get a Doom 2 from the next batch, unless a used one comes up for a normal used price. I regret selling the one I had and no longer give a f*** about downsizing. 2023 is going to the year of upsizing... Super Sizing... Biggy Sizing... embiggening the pedalboard.
What might be a good price for a pike vulcan XL? And how close it is to B7K or vintage microtubes? I has never played a darkglass before
Can confirm the touch sensitivity/nastiness/fuzziness of the BD and 00Funk combo. I built the MadBean version of these with the direct connection to the envelope. IMO everyone, should own or at least try this combo themselves. Throw an OC2 or similar in front of these and you will lose hours of time jamming.
I sold mine back in March for $350, which looks like what they've been selling for on reverb. Couldn't tell you anything about comps with those pedals because I haven't played them unfortunately.
the key thing here is that chunk was never that big of a company in the first place, and they've been out of business for a long time.
as far as how they compare i can't say. obviously spencer makes fantastic stuff, and so did chunk systems.
i've been trying to get a hold of the BD/Agent00Funk combo for years. just never seem to find a set, or even singles. I have a clone of the brown dog right now that's nowhere near what the original sounded like.
anyway, boutique pedals are always a niche market, and when they've been out of business since '08 or whatever, it's not surprising that despite making some of the best stuff ever, they just don't get talked about much.
Yeah this can be an issue with clones. I had an original Chunk BD but due to its size and a slight bleed/ghosting of the fuzz channel into the clean signal when the pedal was bypassed, I asked Ben at Codtone built me a clone. He originally did this based on an online vero layout, but it sounded different from the original. I sent him the Chunk BD to compare and he found some inconsistencies, which significantly affected the sound (see below). My Codtone clone now sounds identical to the OG. Maybe hit Ben up?
Couldn't do much about the Brown Dog bleed thru. It's built with ribbon cable and dual circuit boards. This makes changing the lead dress (to avoid cross talk) impossible.
Got you clone matched now. Turns out there was an error on that vero layout that miss-biased one of the opamp stages, producing that ugly decay. Without reference to the real unit it wasn't hugely apparent, but you were quite right about it being a little off.
Unfortunately there was no elegant way to fix this on my original build, so I etched a new circuit board and rebuilt the entire circuit.
I also discovered that the clipping LEDs (diodes) in the original unit had lower than average and significantly mismatched forward voltages. I constructed perfectly matching duplicates from a series of other diodes. So that now has it sounding pretty close to identical I think you'll find.

Promising news about replacement faceplates. Does anyone know if there's a process or waitlist for folks who purchased defective Octabvres? Cosmetic issues don't normally bother me, but my MKIII is darn near a blank grey box at this point
