3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

In that spirit, I mentioned in this thread a while back that I was going to get a battered Chromatron refinished. I reached out to Spencer who was incredibly helpful with regard to details of the original finish and colours, and then to Dirge Electronics. I’ve been sitting on it for three or four weeks now but maybe this is a good time to let it see the light of day. I think he did a phenomenal job:

Thanks! I love Dirge’s style on his Slowly Meltings and thought it could be cool in the 3 Leaf logo colours. I’m extremely happy with the result and grateful he took it on (I hope he played it while he had it!). I’ve got another pedal with another builder to do their thing with that too.
Thanks! I love the original finish which I think was designed to resemble sleek hifi stereo equipment, but I like the pops of colour and etching that are part of Dirge’s signature style.
I can only imagine how long labelling the controls took!

Super dope, man. I've finally started to get along with my Chromatron again, especially enjoy the down sweep.
On that note, I’ve been enjoying my newly acquired GR on down sweep.
Can anybody point me to examples, either your own clips or commercial music with down sweeps on bass?

I don't understand this fatalistic view. It's not about "his products"-- it's about "a product", the Octabvre MkIII. People want the MkIII. A lesser number of people want his preamp. What's the ideal solution? The people who want to buy the MkIII get to, and the people who want to buy the preamp get to.
NOT: The people who want to buy the MkIII are forced to buy the preamp as well, and not even for a very good discount if at all.
That's like if I offered you your dream car, extremely rare, but at a not-terrible price, but told you that you also had to lay down an extra $20k in order to take a sailboat off my hands.
Is anyone forcing you to buy the car and the boat? No. But would you be wrong in thinking, "Hey, what the Hell is that about?"? The answer is also No.
People make their own decisions, and most of the time you aren't really forced to do anything you don't want to. But that doesn't make anyone immune to criticism for making really "questionable" choices, like what Spencer has done.

Yeah I have a red module in 2 basses and have tried both modules in the past, it’s really musically voiced and very versatile and at no point gets hyped which is something I really dislike about most onboard pres.
the differences between the red and blue are not as big as you might think but still noticeable, I’d say something like the red is more neutral and the blue is a little more muted up top, either way you can’t really go wrong… if your bass is sometimes overly bright then go for the blue otherwise the red is the one for you.
I don’t know why anybody would expect anything less from Spencer, his work is always of the highest quality, that’s why we all covet his pedals for blowing everything out of the water… his preamp is no different.
If he sold the preamp on a Jazz plate like an East or Sadowsky, they would sell much better. Sure, keep the unassembled option for those without a Jazz bass, but the easier you make it for someone to swap preamps, the more likely they are to try something.
I just put my Octabvre Mini back on my board and wow, it just sounds great. The tone knob does a ton, even if I'm fully OC-2 mode most of the time.
Alot of people on their moral high horses. I think it's pretty well understood by now that Spencer does things a bit different, and that definitely rubs some people the wrong way. The debate about anti-trust laws and tying is a bit ridiculous, given the absolutely miniscule scale of his production and the myriad of other options available.
Its a free market, so if his practices upset you, vote with your dollars!
Its a challenging time and a lot of small builders are trying to find ways to navigate it. Cost of raw materials and labour has skyrocketed, component availability is questionable at times. Taylor from IE upset some people when he started "cashing in" by auctioning specials and one-off products to the highest bidder, and other people applauded the move. People rage quitting over Broughton drops and complaining about his semi-random release style, until they manage to land a drop or two and it's all celebrations. Was Spencer's approach this drop a great idea? Probably not, but he sold out just as fast, as have all the other builders I mentioned.
It's just pedals guys and gals, not life or death here
