3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

I have seen this release as well.
I am very curious about the legality of IRs and plugins.

Provided this is what they have done, can you just take a pedal, make an IR of it and sell it as your own ?
Instinctively, I would say no, but also if you change the name and change a certain % of it, you can say it is inspired, without being a copy.

I don't think any of the modeling companies are paying out to the original companies. All the way back to early line 6 days when each amp was cleverly re-named, it always seemed like they were British Stack or whatever to not have to pay out to Marshall et. al. I'm pretty certain that most of us who saw that announcement immediately recognized the typeface and design and thought 3Leaf.

It just seems like a jab back at Spencer to me.

Do any pedal makers who copy or clone others ever pay the original creator? It seems like this is endless, and every one of the multi-effects modelers seem to bake in these obvious nods to pedals or amps we all know.

Exactly. It just seems to be the way with the modelers and clones, but the models blatantly so, which is why it doesn't surprise me at all. If anything modeling a boutique and relatively obscure builder is the surprising thing. Given their history though, it's less surprising. That is why I said it seemed like a dig at 3Leaf.

Not gonna get into the right or wrong of this, but to be fair, Darkglass was also a small boutique that started pretty much the same time as Spencer got rolling with 3Leaf. They were simply more effective (and interested) in scaling their business. Spencer could have gone this route as well, but chose to remain as a 1 man operation.

And Spencer's hands are not exactly clean either, see the Pike Amplification Vulcan and Vulcan XL. Great sounding pedals, but boy did they raise a commotion here when they were released.

That wasn't even the worse thing he did for me, either. Selling off Darkglass intellectual property as his own prototypes.... I can't imagine though that Darkglass hold a grudge, the team involved with Anagram likely know exactly nothing about Spencer and Doug's fall out. But still, what goes around comes around, and as you say, Darkglass went on to take over the bass world, and Spencer, well, didn't.
