I used to run my Proton at 18v. Seemed a touch smoother.

I like the simplicity of the Proton. Very easy to dial in a great sound.
I totally agree, It depends on the amount of compression you are using.my starting point will be in front of my compressor, but I only use a little compression plus I will likely use it as my funk / slap pedal, so possibly different use case.Unless you're using a character compressor and you want the boost to drive it harder. Try it both ways and see what you like. I can see pros and cons on either side.
