4 String bridge for F#BEA

My vote goes to a toploading bridge with tapered strings. Like a Hipshot A. I assume you can use a Hipshot B style bridge also though.

anything that is top/quick loading should work

after a certain point, drilling out a hole you have to thread the string through doesn't work because then it won't hold the ball end of the string anymore

Question : I haven't used 165's - is the ball end actually "smaller" than the string diameter ?

I use the Warwick .175 string on my thumb 5-string (tuned to G), and it has worked out very well. The only thing I had to do was to file the standard JAN-III nut a little. No big deal

By the way I am not tuned on contrabss tuning lol!!!

Gary Goodman will make strings up to a .218 if I remember correctly. I have a set on order from him. You can look there for strings.

TS, most strings have a taper core that should work with anything that is top-loading. If it's strictly string-thru, you'll have to do some modifications (as I'm considering doing with my 8-string).

The bass : i think i'm just going to buy a cheap SX or dean and mod it to death for some laughs and maybe a cool new bass. nothing expensive.

i think ill give the hipshot bridge a try

im also buying my strings from conklin, they make some nice thick strings and thats what i'm gonna try.

^ I think most all factory basses setup for a low F# are at least a 35" scale, and have different pu's/EQ to pick up the low F# properly.

There are several very interesting threads in the "Amps" forum on amp & cabs regarding the use of F#, and the fundamental of a note that low.

I have found that if you use a tapered reamer and gradually enlarge the hole you can go as large as 3/16" and still hold a ball end securely.

But a top loading bridge is better. You have a great many options really. Jauqo's suggestion of a Hipshot is a good one, but there are cheaper bridges;
