4 strings tuned BEAD

I had a RIC 4000 tuned BEAD for awhile until I got a 5'er.
I used a 5 string set, minus the G, and it worked ok.
I couldn't get into the 5 string, sold it, didn't like the BEAD tuning, so went back to standard tuning and returned to my classic rock roots.

I did the BEAD thing with 2 different Fenders, the 1st time was with a lighter gauge 5 string set(minus the G)on a mid 80's MIJ jazz bass "special"(the duff mckagan one), last time with a Marcus Miller jazz only with those DR "Drop" strings(115-??) with okay results, ended up selling that one though so I'm fender-less!!

And to the important question: I only wear socks if I'm gigging and/or working, I'm in Hawaii where the coldest it gets is 70 degrees so its shorts and flip flops

Back on topic, I recall on more than one occasion seeing a 4-string Spector bass which was designed to be in a BEAD tuning. I think it had a 35" scale for that purpose. That's all I know.

I have a Schecter Damien-4 34" bass tuned to BEAD. It took a little nut filing to accommodate the heavier strings. I wasn't sure if the S-Tek bridge would need modification, so I decided to start with a set of SIT Power Core strings. (They're all tapered.) They sound great and I love the tension!

I wear socks all the time - definitely right now! I even wear socks to bed on cold days. I like the gold toe black cotton socks for most days - and heavy wool hiking socks on cold days.

Have a look at this Spector Forte ad from some time ago. Seller says it was custom-made to 35" scale for BEAD tuning.

The following is true:

When I wanted a bass tuned BEAD i ordered a custom neck so that only the B string was 35 inch scale.

A year later I got tired of the BEAD thing and just started tuning it normal.

Now here's the weird part; that worked out just fine and I haven't worn socks in the last 2 days.

I'd say 35" scale is optimal for alow B. 36" if you can find it.

Tim Commerford uses this tuning and tends to play jazz style basses from Fender or Lakland (and sometimes Stingrays).

the only problem might be with a heavy gauge and the top nut slots .. !?
slight neck adjustment , action , setup , harmonics ... all the normal ' changing string gauge ' kinda stuff ...
nothing major ...

34" scale has worked fine for me regardless of how many strings or whatever tuning ...

no socks ... i refuse until it's really winter .. !
