Just got my BTB406QM down off the wall and mounted a GK-3B synth pickup on it and played through my GR-55. So I guess it's rejoining my "currently active" short list. Had been on that wall a long time...

Strangely, finding it way easier to play the 6 than when I hung it up - got really really comfy on 5s in the interim, and just better overall, doesn't seem so challenging any more.

I will say it again, Jaco only needed 4 strings. just saying.

There are a lot of bassists in the same league as Jaco IMHO. I do think he was ahead of his time. Some play 4s, some play 5s and some play 6s. Here are 3 of my favorite 6 players.

Maybe sx would be the most affordable. Keisel is supposed to be affordable, but I think they're around the same price as comparable ibanez... And even more if you have any options. I think anyway.

If you're in europe, I can very much recommend Marusczcyk. You might be able to get a 6-string elwood-L for under 1500 of you keep it low on the extra's. A Frog might be slightly more expensive.

There may be cheaper options for you over there, but Im pretty sure that keisel 6 strings are 2 octaves and definitely 16.5 mm at the bridge. Super good for fingerstyle, but take some precision if youre going to slap. Not sure if shipping cost would out you over, though.

I have no trouble slapping with small string spacing. I have a Ibanez GVB36 with 14mm spacing. Love that small string spacing.

I'm jealous. Love the carvin I had, but slap was hard for me

I've also found my LB76 a bit tight to slap on, but I've made it work. the tight spacing is great for ripping through fast lines with my fingers though.

While we are here: what is a good and affordable fretless six string besides Ibanez?

Schecter Studio... you can get them used for a song. I've owned 5 of these studios in every configuration and they are the best bang for the buck.

I wish Schecter would make an extended range bass at a 34" scale length.

Yes a Carvin has my attention as is a used Modulus quantum 6. What's the spacing on the Carvin?

Most of them don't. Sound quality and playability are what you look for I guess, and a good preamp...

Loud ABGs exist. They's just rare, big, and expensive. But they're out there. Or in here, rather (I've got examples of most of the top contenders here.) The Emerald Balor and the Maruszczyk Svoboda are the current co-kings of acoustic volume, in my book.

Ibanez SR506 here. Love everything about it... neck, bart pickups, tone versatility and easy to play. It's my oldest bass... purchased new in 2004. I've used it more on recordings than any of my other basses. So easy to get a good tone.
