I couldn't keep my mouth shut on this one.

I was playing a gig with my last band. I have a friend who happens to drive for a local start-up limo service. He asked me if we wanted to show up to the gig in a limo and if we gave him and the company some love that it would just cost us gas for it. Well, we show up in the limo and the guy who ran the venue was just blown away by it. He pulled me and another one of the band guys of to the side and asked us if we wanted to headline the show. We said sure. We kinda stole the headline spot from another band but this guy loved us because we helped him out if a band dropped off the bill. The band that was the headliner got a little upset by it and granted we helped it a little by talking s*** behind their backs because they weren't that good. I guess they had enough of all of our's and they called us out right in the middle of their set. A year and a half later, we all realized that we kinda became as*****s. I was instantly PO'ed cuz you just don't do that as was the rest of my band. We all walked out after they said their stuff and I told the rest of the band that we needed to take the high road and do nothing. They all agreed and we went on with the show. After we got done with our set, we were loading out and we went to our roadies truck and someone took a crap right in his passenger's seat. We all knew who it was and we were out for blood then. We talked to the cop on duty and the venue owner. He said that the other band would never play there again because of the way they handled themselves and the stunt they pulled. The cop said that there wasn't anything he could do save for file a vandalism report.

I'm not gonna lie. I think that peeing on the band's van is just funny anyway. Bands mess with each other all the time, especially if they know each other. I've played shows with the OP's band, and to anyone who says kids don't get it...you're wrong. I've had my ride pissed on by people before, and I never got mad about it. Everyone here is talking about taking the high road, but they're also saying their gonna throw fists if it ever happens...Who needs to grow up?

For the most part, the audience can't hear lyrics or even care to process them for a "message" even if they could.

Almost nobody cares about a "message" in music. Some, yes...most? Especially in some local, bar situation? Come on...

Who's one of the largest selling groups of all-time worldwide? AC/DC. Know what their "message" is about consistently? Sex. Sex....and when it's not sex, it's sex. A lot of people aren't even aware that Shook Me All Night Long is about screwing, (if I believe what I hear from some), let alone that Thunderstruck is about getting blown by some strippers in Texas, and that Hard as a Rock is about being...well...hard as a rock, and that Whole Lotta Rosie is about doing a pretty fat woman.

Anyway, you get my point. Don't take yourselves too seriously, and don't worry about what any other band thinks of you. Do it because you love it.

oh and you are apparently very "Socially-aware" about depression and suicide, but think that "vandalism" and "public urination" is sport?

To be fair, I doubt the two subject matters would find a similar audience. The types of people who list AC/DC among their favorite bands probably aren't terribly concerned with depth on a lyrical level, or even a musical one.

I think the behavior was immature, regardless.

Wow. . .before I left town for grad school, the metal band that I was in used to play with a few other local bands, mostly punk bands that made fun, simple music. We would rag on each other from stage all the time (the bass player from one of the other bands liked to talk about how cute we were when we tried to be metal, I would tell the crowd that if we all closed our eyes, held hands, and believed, they might play a fourth chord, that sort of thing). But it was all in good fun, and we were all great friends. A couple of times I ended up sprinting onto stage with one of my basses in hand when somebody broke a string, and at our last show, every one of the other bands surprised us by doing a cover of one of our songs in their style. I never saw anything close to this level of immaturity, and for God's sake, we were playing with a bunch of high school punk bands! Was I really, really lucky, or is this some sort of human defecation horror story thread and I missed the memo?

I hear a lot of "grow up" and "be mature" but come on guys...as with most gigging musicians we weren't meant to be immaculately mature all the time. If we WERE, then we'd be politicians or activists in PETA or something of that sort lol. 9 to 5 jobs don't make our day and music tends to be people's escape from all that crap (I know it is for me).

some people are hurting inside, and they find various ways to express their pain. some may self-mutilate [or 'self-hurt' as they say these days], some MAKE JOKES that may seem inappropriate.

you'd think that as a 'band with a message' you'd find a better way to handle this tiny, itsy bitsy little moment in time.

besides, suicide is better than the living death of incompetent therapists and 'anti-depressant' medication. if you don't believe me, ask me.

The OP's band comes out the loser. I doubt the guy intended to dis your band, even if his comment wasn't in good taste. You acted like a malicious bunch of nitwits, committed a crime in the process (public urination), and are now lower on the totem pole than the other band's singer. Your cause, however depressing, was not advanced by your immature and senseless behavior.

BTW, nobody buys records because the band supports suicide.

A few years back, I was in a goth-metal band named "Born in Winter". We played a show opening for The Fray (don't ask me how those styles go together), right before they headed out for their first major tour. We played the first slot. During the second band's set, the singer said, "I was born in winter too, but I'm not stupid enough to wear black all the time." We took the high road and didn't say anything. Now, three years later, this other band is nowhere to be found. Born in Winter just recently finished their first east coast tour (without me... ya know, the whole different musical directions thing).

Nor are we meant to be self righteous or indignant about some mesasage that we portray ourselves to be serious about.

My problem in not with the actual peeing on the car per say - but thinking they are above the other band and feeling a need and a right to strike back at the them because the other band didn't buy into and support their message.

This is what the other band was really saying - "OK the first band was here to deliver a message - we are here to deliver some entertainment"

Really - get over yourselves - just because you think you have a message that is important doesn't make you better than anyone else or even give you the right to be heard or taken seriuosly.
