A Little Roscoe Fun

Here's the latest Roscoe arrival! This one was a special order, so it's gone as soon as I settle up with the guy who ordered it. But it's fun to look at anyway!

Ryan, if output is your main complaint about the Fat Stacks but you like the tone, maybe consider a set of Big Splits. That way you can still use the wood covers as well. They may not be as "fat" sounding but output is more like other pickups.
Thanks for the suggestion----I'll definitely check into those! I'd love to be able to keep the wood covers on the bass, and retain at least some of the tone that it currently has.

And yes, my ONLY complaint is the low output of the Fat Stacks. I love the sound of the bass, but even with the preamps in my other 3 basses turned down as low as they will go, they are still quite a bit louder than this bass. It messes with both my in ear mix and my stage volume when I switch basses.

That's my personal "little rig" that I use for a blues duo thing I do locally. The Supro Bass Mofo is a 70W all-tube head, and the NV-115 is just a great little cabinet with a nice, pillowy bottom. I don't know how well it came across through the room mics, but it works great for me on little restaurant gigs where we're basically background music. I love that rig!

That rig is sweet. I just listened to the room clips and they have a really cool vibe. I thought my NV115 GAS had subsided but now I see myself definitely digging it again. I'm tempted to move some cabs I have now and grab one.

When I was noodling on some basses locally I was playing through a Fender Super Bassman head and I think a 610 cab, could have been an 810. Anyway, it sounded pretty nice. I love my GB combo, but the all tube thing is a bit alluring. I only use my amp for home practice and occasional small jazz gigs (my church gig is IEM) so I don't need/want anything huge, but maybe a small tube combo might be fun to try.

Greg,

How does it sound with Roscoe soap bar pups? I'm curious about going more "tubey" with my sound. Small tube amp for at home, maybe a REDDI for church. I love my GB stuff (SS) and anything GB really, but I'm looking to maybe try something different.

The rig sounds great with everything I've tried so far!

My main concern was actually the cab itself. With no tweeter, I was worried I'd miss the top end presence. Turns out I don't. It's either in there sufficiently (which I think is the case), or I don't really need/want it in the first place.

All this has coincided with my switching to a P bass with flats, so that also factors into it. With a P, I usually end up rolling off the tone 10-20% as a starting point anyway.

In the DI and room mic audio clips (which you can hear by following links in the comments section of the video on youtube), that was the Roscoe PJ6 with no boost from the OBP-1 along with the passive tone control wide open. I'd call that "flat" in shorthand. I might have boosted the OBP-1 bass just a smidge for the all-bridge pickup part, but it was miniscule if at all...

Merry Christmas, everybody! I had a little fun with a Roscoe and a multi-tracked Christmas carol.

For the life of me, I can't understand why this bass is still here. A Roscoe 6 string PJ? Yes, please!!!
Roscoe Century Standard Plus PJ 6

Killing some time, waiting for my fretless to get finished, listening to this again. The C string sounds so nice on this bass. Much more "mellow" or something than any other Roscoe 6 I've played/owned. I know I've tried and fail 3 times with the 6, but if I were to try again, this would be tempting. Hard to believe the "first one built" is still around. A little piece of history and a great bass.

Still intrigued by a small tube amp as well.
