A New Fender Coronado Bass?????

For the folks wondering about this instrument, after seeing so many negative posts about the Coronado bass, it's crazy how rumors get started and opinions become semi truths!

I have a 67 Coronado II that I use on almost every session I do. Plays awesome, sounds HUGE, full of character and a cool midrange voice.

An unsung bass for sure.

I bought my 67 Coronado at a shop 13 years ago and on that day hesitated between that and a 70's sunburst Fender Jazz with rosewood and block neck. In the end I picked the Coronado because it sounded better.

I work for Ishibashi Music. In case you don't know what that is, Ishibashi is one of the largest Musical Instrument Retailers in Japan.

One of my customers from Italy asked me about this today so we called Fender Japan directly to answer this question for him and in turn for you all.

The answer is, there are none in production at the moment and they have no plans to be making either a Coronado Bass or Starcaster Bass at the moment.

The chances of them doing it in the future would be pretty small. Sorry I don’t have better news for you.

And before anyone asks, I have no idea what Fender USA or Mexico's plans are.

Additionally, through doing more snooping of my own on OSG and Harmony Central, the rumors are these (or at least the Starcaster) will be CIJ. But in all honesty, I'm going to put my money on MIK, seeing as Fender already has the gearing there to make semi-hollows (Gretsch and Guild). If they are CIJ or MIK, I will be super happy. Say what you will, I have my preferences. But if the Coronado Bass comes in Antigua from Japan or Korea, I will flip. Seriously, bonkerstime. And if they just so happen to add in a Coronado XII to the guitar line? So long bank account.

Things seem just a bit different, judging from what I received in an e-mail directly from the Customer Relations at Fender:

Hello, We are still in the final R&D phase with this product so we don’t have any information as far as detailed specs, price or availability. We are looking at a release date before the end of the year if all goes as planned so we should have more information then.

Here's a picture from 1966 when my band had 3 matching Coronado II guitars. It really wasn't a great bass. I played it through a Dual Showman with 2 JBL D140s. It was a disappointing setup. I replaced it later with a Gibson EB-2 and an Acoustic 360. That rig could pin the people in the back of the venue to the wall!
