Aguilar Tone Hammer

Tried it today. I was talking to Marco about it as he gave me a quick rundown.

The tone shaping is great. The mid sweep goes from 180hz (IIRC) to 1khz. Great clean sound. When the pre-switch is engaged, the DI signal bypasses all tone shaping AND the AGS. When it's in post, it includes the EQ and AGS.

It has a thinner gain sweep than the AGRO and can't achieve "fully saturated" sounds. It does sound great, and is almost the exact same distortion otherwise, though.

Tomorrow I'll be bringin' home an OBP-3 and possibly an AGRO, too... Reviews will be posted on bassfuzz.com.

one of the reasons I wanna go for a Tone Hammer is that, I play some straight PA gig often, can I get Aggie amp kind of tone if I connect that with my bass, or simply just plug a bass with a OBP3 will get the job done? (as I'm using a AG500+GS410 set ip in the studio)

Can anyone who played the tone hammer can give me some insight?

Won an OBP-3 today, so I can't compare yet... I will soon, though.

Alright, spent a long time A/Bing the Tone Hammer and the AGRO on Monday.

The Tone Hammer is a LOT more subdued than the AGRO. It's much more OD-oriented. Geof was telling me that though they work very differently internally, there is some overlap in the sounds they can achieve.

The cool thing about the Tone Hammer is that the Bass/Treble controls are AFTER the AGS circuit, but the sweepable mids are BEFORE it, which makes it a lot more versatile. You can pull a TON of different sounds out of it!

At low gain, the AGS sounds great! It adds some presence and growl, great for slap. It starts to clip a bit as you raise it for a light OD, and it can get some low-grade distortion at higher-gain levels.

The AGRO and Tone Hammer really act as counterparts. I don't think Aguilar would put an OBP in a stompbox and call it new, so I think that the TH is probably different altogether. The TH has sweepable mids, but the AGRO has Contour, Presence, and a lot more gain.

For those of you interested in the ToneHammer, I just finished a review for it. It will be posted on the Aguilar site this weekend under their "In The Field" section. Without giving too much away, it's an awesome device.......The bass player community will rejoice over having this thing become a part of their rigs...I know I am.

I've been using a Sansamp ParaDriver as a preamp. The new
ToneHammer is very similar but a touch dryer sounding and
the overdrive is MUCH more usable, as well as sounding better. It should work very well as a preamp. I can't wait.

i got to use one at the GTG. it sounds amazing as a preamp. the distortion was pretty useable too, alot of low end grit.Dave Booncroft the CEO of aguilar was there giving me the rundown and controlling all of the
knobs as i used it, to show me all that it does. this thing is really versatile. it would be great to have in the gigbag to use at shows when you cant bring your rig. plug right into the board and your good to go. Dave said they will be out by sept. 1rst.:hyper:

I already own the Agro, and the ToneHammer sounds intriguing. I'm really curious to hear y'all have to say about what they sound like together. :)

Finished reading the review!! Thanks so much for the "real world" review Mr. Lutz... I already placed pre-order of mine....n wait for the AG500 head come on sep....Can't wait!!! :hyper:
