Am I the jerk?

The gig you described doesn't sound like the band is on the fast track to the big time. Sounds like the BL is delusional.
Time to bail.
Well, big time is relative. Will we get signed? I doubt it. Will we continue to expand our fan base, get to play increasingly bigger shows, and be on the same bills as the musicians who inspired us, and hopefully break even, or have enough left over to buy a new amp? Maybe. Our genre is know for not paying out. Ska bands don't ever win for a variety of reasons, one being their size. BUT our fans are amazing, and so are other ska musicians. Sharing a bill with the Pietasters, whose major hit was the first song we ever learned, was really rewarding to me. So BL and I share a similar vision, just maybe not on the execution.

I have this thing I do when things get heated over messages - text messages, slack, messenger, email, whatever text based medium - where I pick up my phone and call the person to talk using my voice. If I think you're being a jerk, or I think you think I'm being a jerk ... probably we need to talk with voices.

Probably you both have good intentions, and something is getting lost in the medium of communication. Talk to the guy, and listen to him.
TALK? You mean that green app with the little sideways C thingy? Actually, yes, agreed.

My band plays 1-2 charity gigs "gratis" a year (on average). The furthest we have traveled has been 1 hour (one-way) earlier this year, because it was also an audition for a yearly festival that usually has big-name and local talent. No way that I would travel 4 hours to play. If your BL is aware of your impending move, he is being VERY inconsiderate of your situation. I moved (hopefully) for the last time 5 years ago, and it darned near KILLED me !! Good luck with your move and your band situation !!

The band I've been in for 9 years, once more of a hobby, now more serious, has been an increasingly challenging obligation. BL and I are the only original members, and since BL has retired, he's recruited some better musicians and set some lofty, sometimes unrealistic goals. He's gotten us some great gigs, the new members are inspiring and good people. We're practicing more, longer hours, all good things in theory. But he’s just nonstop.

I sensed this shift earlier in the year and scaled back (all but dropped) my other passion, cycling, (after training all winter for the season) thinking it might be ok to focus more on music for the time being given the situation with the band. One can't do it all. Plus, TBH, the cycling can be restarted again.

Well, life happens. I've had a busy year with my almost adult children, traveling to help them move out of town, solve more complex life problems, etc. Recently we decided to sell our house. So it's been a mad scramble getting that ready. Throughout it all, it’s still been possible to practice and keep up with band obligations.

BL booked a questionable out of town show (4 hour drive, not a great venue, $300 split 8 ways) this coming Saturday. It’s killing me to lose a Saturday for this, but fine, part of the deal with being in a band, we weren’t too busy when booked, plus it’s for charity.

We’ve been talking about recording for 2 months. I get informed yesterday that recording starts the Sunday after this out of town show. All day. I was surprised, and it seems so was the drummer. We had talked about recording “that week” and “on the same days we practice” but never locked down a time. It’s possible, verbally or non-verbally, some loose agreement was made to record that day, but I have no recollection of it. Nonetheless, recording was apparently scheduled without so much as a “Hey – you good with recording all day Sunday after that out of town Saturday show?” I’ve been pretty clear about being maxxed out with the upcoming move, which starts a few days after.

I can’t do it. I can’t lose a whole weekend, with a moving truck coming 3 days after, and declined. Well, recording hinged on getting drums and bass down first, then the rest of the week for others. (It’s not a studio, but BL’s house with a recording engineer.) BL says “he might have to be a d!ck” about this and get a sub or “he might have to be a d!ck” to everyone else and reschedule. That was fine with me - do what's best for the band. Then silence. The band slack is normally chatty, but is now quiet. Who knows what’s being said now offline. Simultaneously, I feel like I’ve let them down, and also this was quite unreasonable. Any thoughts?

No, you are not the jerk.
Family first, your sanity second, tacos third.

It seems to me like you're the least of is (BL) concerns because you need to have the bed tracks done before the other band members can record their tracks during the week because some will be on vacation soon after the recording. You on the other hand have to move to another place three days after the Saturday's gig and you need time to finish packing up and moving logistics last minutes stuff... You're not the jerk, guess who is...

I can understand your concerns, all seems to be happening in a very short time and at the wrong time also...

If you've been in the band for 9 years then I imagine this guy knows you pretty well. I assume that you two are at least "good acquaintances" if not actual friends. So this guy knows where you at in your life. It's not like he's a manager at Walmart and you're calling off a shift. So to use the phrase I might have to be a dick is pretty telling. You are not the jerk.

He's absolutely a friend, but one best in smaller doses. I've heard about all his jokes and stories and him mine.

Nope! Haven't been 20 for a good while. Hello fellow bassist/cyclist! I don't know many. Or any, really. What's your specialty? Mine is being mid pack filler in masters road and CX events.

I’m not much of a bassist, but there’s a full-carbon Ibis Hakkalügi frame with ENVE carbon forks in my garage waiting for me to stop fooling around with new basses and get back to fooling around building personal bicycles. Also a Colnago Master frame dating back to racing in the early 90s that could use some restoration love.

I've heard about all his jokes and stories and him mine.

That’s an amazing kind of friendship in its own right.

Might be time for a mutiny against the delusional BL, who doesn't even play in the band. You're the guy to lead it. Skip the no-dough charity gig, and get the other guys to agree with you to postpone the recording until after you've moved. My $.02.
Edit: What's the alternative? Do what the nutty BL tells you this time and commit to more years of the same nonsense? My guess is that the other guys are on the same page as you. Call a meeting without the BL.

Very nice! I have a carbon Trek Emonda (perhaps the P-Bass of road bikes?) as my daily/race bike. And of course an American P-bass to match. Both serve me well.
