I liked the demo - I think my favorite sounds were from midnight on, though not the last one. Now can you do the same thing but with the neck pickup? Form emerges out of chaos, only to get submerged once again...

I've seen them live several times and he definitely pulls it off. They're a real trip.

My favorite flautist from the past couple decades is Matthias Ziegler...his contrabass flute with the vibrating membrane tonehole gizmo is completely off the hook!

but other than that, I am way more into flute as an orchestral color than as a solo instrument. The difference in tone between nearly any first chair flautist in your local symphony orchestra and all but the absolute cream-of-the-crop jazz flautists is like the difference between diamonds and zircon. Fake zircon.

since most first chair orchestra players can’t improvise very well, i think you’re comparing limes and raspberries.

In one sense, sure. But I'm talking about tone: That sound that 90% of jazz flautists get out of their instrument is pure dog farts compared to the lambent crystalline clarity that an only-slightly-better-than-average orchestral player can summon effortlessly.

sure, but one might say that’s a pretty euro-centric definition of tone.

Guilty as charged! Have we talked about my ideal trumpet tone yet? This is the one that always pisses off my jazz compatriots:

I prefer Herb Alpert's or Al Hirt's tone to Miles Davis' or Freddie Hubbard's tone.
(Caveat: When Miles used the Harmon mute, that was a badass sound.)

I like it! Did you get the bonus stuff with the pedal? (pin, sticker, etc.) I was tempted to grab one for a sec but there's other stuff I want/need more.

One thing I thought of - the bass you're using is active right? The pedal seems fine with it. (Sometimes fuzz pedals don't play well with active instruments, but this is more of a distortion/preamp?)

music, not by a long shot for me. (and i just listened to a bunch of their stuff before commenting.) following is imo:

hirt is a better technician than either alpert or miles.

hirt and alpert are both better entertainers than miles.

miles is the far greater artist—possibly because of his flaws and how he used them. and it's also possible that he didn't care about having a "perfect" tone, ya know? (to whit: "The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfu¢ker who plays it is 80 percent.”)

it does bring up the idea if a classic "good/perfect" tone (or technique, for that matter) is also particularly soulful or full of personality.

I did get the bonus stuff which was surprising when I opened the box because I either didn't realize it would come with that stuff or completely forgot in the handful of days between ordering and delivery. I'm not the smartest.

The bass is active, and I do keep the preamp on though the tone controls are all flat.
