I don't think there's anything about those qualities that's inherently mutually exclusive...it's just very rare to find them combined in appropriate proportions.

"appropriate" is always an interesting word. who gets to decide?

there's nothing *inherently* mutually exclusive. basically, my bias is showing. all these young folks who have all the chops in the world and that's all i hear—chops.

But I like it this way, it's the way I expect a hundred-year-old recording to sound, it adds a certain atmosphere to it that appeals to me. Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade played through this thing is great, and reminds me that this is probably how my grandparents first heard it in the 1930s or 40s. Listening to these old recordings on this machine is almost like a time machine, like listening to a ghost.

i often wonder if we can really hear things the way they did back in the day. the technology and music you're describing were both *new* and cutting edge . . . now they're quaint (and possibly nostalgic for a time we never knew).



you guys are way cooler when it comes to all the tape manipulation stuff.

and i have some listening to do of music that people posted (congrats!).

I’m with you on the chops thing, Again complex subject, I don’t have the skills to put my thoughts into words coherently for you all. It always ends up a cluster &&)(@ of unorganized ramblings.

I released a single today - it's a new mix of the video I posted earlier in the week:



No fast chops on display, thank goodness! I just realized though, I could have incorporated some of the ambient sounds from the video, that would have made it more appropriate here.

I shelled out for Bandcamp Pro so that I could post the video with it. It also lets me see where the views come from - so far, everything is from TalkBass!!! Woohoo, TB FTW! lol

I think I blew it though - it's like I'm re-releasing the song within the week - I just couldn't wait. I need a manager. Yeah right. I'll see if I can get some momentum going again.

Awesome. The flanger sound is what I was after. Time to go check some demos.

Looking at my Reaper notes, I have it as Dingwall NG > F.13 flanger > Mercury7 reverb and then mic'd through my sketchy homebrew sealed 1x12 cab. I guess I didn't use the PD7 on that part after all. Go figure.

Got talked into a live electronic gig in a few weeks, my first time playing out electronic since Nov 2019 (and first time at all since Feb 2020). Pondering all the equipment I'll have to schlep for this makes me wonder if I should've taken up the flute or the violin or some other instrument that doesn't require multiple trips to my truck to load up and load in.

Depends a lot on how settled your rig is but Ive very much gone a similar route as pedalboards with the electronic stuff. Most of the cabling and power (usb hub) are under the small platform on the left board. All velcrod on. Only 6 things to plug in when I move it. They both fit in pedalboard cases.

Impressive controller-to-sound-generation-ratio.

EDIT to say: I haven't done solo electronic in awhile but the principle is the same with the synth rig in my post-rock band. I've tried a full on modular setup, a laptop-and-controller setup, and kept simplifying until it was a piece of wood, a Linnstrument, and a single synth. Much easier to deal with for gigging. I could mount it on a pedalboard but the Linnstrument is just a bit wide for standard sizes. If I ever get around finding a proper case for it all, it will happen.

On the chops vs/as music discussion, I don't have a lot to add on listening that I haven't already said on this thread (see below).

BUT, I just got done with a touch guitar lesson, and something has changed in me as a player. As a bassist, I learned on upright and when I got to bass guitar a few years later that mentality really shaped how I played. I was always just "find your own way" in terms of how I learned, and I didn't employ teachers who focused on technique.

But now, I'm working with a teacher who is very focused on technique and ergonomics. Maybe it's living with hand pain, maybe it's something else. I have no interest in speed per se, but it is fascinating to find my body moving in new ways in middle age, as opposed to the usual "new things are going wrong with it" experience. The touch guitar lessons have also affected my playing on other instruments as well, though I still have a heavy touch on bass if I'm not loud enough in a band setting.

I learned , for me at least, proper breathing techniques help a great deal to relax when in loud settings not hearing yourself play.
Keeps the right hand plucking loose and relaxed.
