Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Question... one thing I did when mixing the recent album was a lot of motion panning. Often, I'd tie it in with the dynamics, like when a wave of sound comes in, I'd pan it in a certain direction then have it fade away. Now, if mixing were a synthesizer, I could figure out how to automate it, tying velocity or volume into the pan. But a DAW isn't a synth. Next time around, I'd like to streamline this technique. Any ideas about how one might accomplish that?

What DAW? Reaper can do that with volume via ‘parameter modulation.’ Or velocity to a dummy synth track. Otherwise, I think Id go to VCV Rack, that would let you do it many ways.

If you’re asking about per voice on a synth, I think that would be a parameter in the synth.

If you wanted static panning, eg, a certain velocity always delivers a certain position in the panorama, PanMan won’t do that as far as I can tell (there is always a LFO so in envelope or ADSR mode louder will move more or less or faster or slower) but it would be possible to do in Bitwig where one can assign an envelope modulator to a pan control for consistent results. The bonus with the Bitwig modulator is that you could control it with aftertouch, mod wheel, velocity, whatever. I’m sure Max4Live could do this too, and I even bet it’s somehow possible in Logic.

Thanks... I looked it over, and it sorta made sense to me, but I didn't see where I can select the shapes, and I think I'd want it to be a one shot, like a non-repeating ramp or something. I'll try to mess around with it, soon

Ya, you can totally do it with audio. This throws it right when the audio is louder. Adjusting the baseline value and max volume could make it hover around the center.

How about someone controlling the pan knob while you play???
Like someone “playing” the mixer on the output of the synth?

In theory, that would work, but I'd rather do this at the mixing stage, as I have to consider other things in the mix and where they are, too.

I'm still putting my head around side-chaining... do I just pull this in as a plugin or do I have to set up additional outputs like I do with a SC compressor? And will this always just pan to the right as it's set up, here? Ideally, I'h have it pan something, then the next time the threshold gets hit, it starts panning again in the other direction from where it left off.

I feel like I'm chasing Moby Dick on this one.

Interesting. I did a bit of that in a live performance with one collaborator. I sent him a clock and he sent me audio from his modular which ran through my effects processing. It was fun to just have faith that he’d send me something useful and I’d process it appropriately.

If I remember right, wasn’t that a part of what Eno did with Roxy?

I immediately thought of what Holger Czukay did with Can after Rosko Gee joined on bass. But actually not so sure how much he synchronously manipulated the band's signals (though he did it a lot in the mixing process!) - I'm reading All Gates Open right now, looking forward to that section (just got to Future Days).

I was just turned on to this album - (really) early Moog experiments - I'm really enjoying it:



Almost went to pick up a 1010 Music Blue Box but it didn't end up happening. I really don't need it, though I think it would work well for me. Haven't fired up the Moogs in a while - but I have been playing bass which is good - wasn't doing that for a while either.

Honestly though, the internet as a whole is generally stupid and a waste of time, and TB is not immune to that characteristic. It's just a bit less stupid than some other sites.

You don’t need to side chain for this, though that would be a way to give you added control potentially.
The panning direction is dictated by the positive, negative, center. But with audio amplitude being essentially unipolar, hrm, I’m not sure off the top of my head how I’d have it swap +- just with this. I feel like you could do that with some onset detector switching paths or +- directly, but Id have to mess with it.

I have figured this out in VCV Rack. Audio amplitude is controlling the level of pan and transients are triggering an inverter, thus changing the left/right direction. Cool effect, now that I've heard it, I think I have a song I'll use it on.

To adjust the

• level of pan = CV on the mixer
• threshold of transients that trigger the flip = threshold
• how fast the flip happens = rise/fall

All done in free modules. DM me and I'll send you the patch if you like.
