Curious to hear what you get out of it!

Ive been looking into the Mosaic 1U modules lately. Affordable and very modulatable. I have a 104 Make Noise skiff sitting in a closet that may just become a drum machine. Ordered a couple of these to put some 1U modules in

if mixing were a synthesizer, I could figure out how to automate [panning], tying velocity or volume into the pan. But a DAW isn't a synth.

To be clear, you're talking about "automating" panning in the sense that the left/right position of a sound is tied to some other parameter, so that panorama tracks/follows volume or velocity etc. and you never have to touch the (virtual) pan pot on your DAW's mixer yourself...correct?

If so, the only way I've seen that sort of thing accomplished is via one of the plug-ins in Cycling 74's Pluggo, which was essentially a Function Generator with an input vs. output matrix so you could assign certain parameters -- e.g., an Envelope Follower strapped across an audio track -- to certain other parameters -- e.g., the (virtual) pan pot on your DAW's mixer.

But my recollection (admittedly it's been years since I used that plug-in, and fwiw I didn't use it to control panning but rather an Aux Send, or some parameter in another plug-in) was that it took so long to set up the i/o mapping and then to set all the parameter thresholds at the right levels to generate the desired effect, that by the time all was said and done it would have been far more efficient to just grab the Aux Send (or the Pan Pot) in the DAW's mixer and automate that move.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean but based on what you wrote, my options arr limited. I can do to on the hardware synths, but not the pedal board. That texture from my video I posted last week WA the one I was thibk a bout, how I could dynamically control panning.
 
Check out SoundToys PanMan. It does this well. With Logic, Bitwig, and other DAWS you can automate parameters as well. But if we’re talking LFO to panning, PanMan is quite good. You can hear it at the tail end of this track.


I have panman. Is it capable of doing what I need in this regard? I don't see how I'd have it based off of the dynamics.

f you’re asking about per voice on a synth, I think that would be a parameter in the synth.

If you wanted static panning, eg, a certain velocity always delivers a certain position in the panorama, PanMan won’t do that as far as I can tell (there is always a LFO so in envelope or ADSR mode louder will move more or less or faster or slower) but it would be possible to do in Bitwig where one can assign an envelope modulator to a pan control for consistent results. The bonus with the Bitwig modulator is that you could control it with aftertouch, mod wheel, velocity, whatever. I’m sure Max4Live could do this too, and I even bet it’s somehow possible in Logic.

You're not showing ignorance, you're showing resourcefulness: If you had two independent compressors (or a stereo compressor with separate, unlinked detectors) you could mult the signal going to the side-chain detector and flip the polarity of one side only, so that you get reciprocal opposing gain reduction on the two sides

ha. i was thinking have a compressor (or would it be a limiter—see i *am* ignorant) “read” the dynamics and then open up a panner.

You're describing an Envelope Follower...but I'll bet it would be easy enough to wire up the detector in a compressor (or limiter) to output a voltage which could be assigned externally, rather than having that voltage control the internal gain reduction element. But I don't know of any commercially available dynamics processors that offer that feature. (At least, not in the hardware realm; I'm pretty out-of-the-loop when it comes to plugins.)

I have long yearned to be "that guy" in a live ensemble: Gimme a mixer with a crap-ton of inputs and aux sends, gimme all my pedals (or at least all my looping delays), and gimme a band of adventurous and daring improvisors with big ears. I'm not going to play a single note; I'm just going to process (and/or re-play) stuff that everyone else in the band plays.

I know plenty of musicians who'd be into it, and I have all the gear (the Yamaha 01V or the Roland M-240 mixers that have been gathering dust in my studio for several years would be ideal candidates)...just haven't had the opportunity. Or, frankly, a pressing desire to haul even more gear to a gig!

Interesting. I did a bit of that in a live performance with one collaborator. I sent him a clock and he sent me audio from his modular which ran through my effects processing. It was fun to just have faith that he’d send me something useful and I’d process it appropriately.

If I remember right, wasn’t that a part of what Eno did with Roxy?

Goofing around with some ideas today and thought - I could really use a quantizer...
Then I remembered I had a Zoia. Problem solved.

I have a Zoom ms60b which I often forget about because it takes a minute to remember how to navigate the confusing controls, but it has a lot of the "standard" effect types. Makes it easy to try something out before deciding to blow money on another pedal sometimes. Some of it's effects are decent and some sound like ass, obvious digital clones. But still useful in some situations.
