Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

(I’m barely exaggerating for real, the 2am text really happened more than once)

I have a friend and former (I guess) bandmate who would text any time of day or night about whatever random thoughts he was having, and to make it worse, he never completes a thought in one text. Minimum of three, spread out over ten minutes or more. If you get one text from him, buckle up, there are several more being typed up as you read the first one and they'll be on the way shortly.

This prompted me to learn a bit more about the capabilities of my smart phone, such as how to turn off all message alerts during sleeping hours, while leaving the voice phone ringtone on in case I get an emergency call. Problem solved. Mostly.

high five heading your way @Spectrum
i’d block him from 8pm to 8am then abandoned all mixing duties
and still blocked his msgs regularly
add the fact that the man had zero computer or DAW skills made this ordeal all the more infuriating.
In his mind, since I « cant do it » i’ll stalk someone who does non stop.

didn’t homer write a book about this?

Camus did.

Thanks for the commiseration everyone. I am hoping this will all be over soon, and I have learned my lesson for sure.

Good point on the small triumphs, @steubig — I just felt guilty.

you have good intentions but it seems imo that it literally put a huge weight on your back

Ditto. And worse, I don’t want it to suck.

Light controlled expression “pedal” widget anyone?

Quick gig report - ZOMBI was great! I took short videos of each song so I could try and reconstruct the setlist, but not a lot worth presenting. They played some new stuff, plus my brain isn't sharp enough to recognize songs as much as I love and listen to these guys. Steve Moore only played his Hagstrom 8-string (pretty sure it's one of the newer ones) - played quite a few songs just on keys, but for the last song they played (Orion from one of their early albums) he played bass and keys at the same time!

I caught a couple of songs by OM, but I was there for ZOMBI so I went home - it's past my bedtime!

If you're trying to hurt me, it's working.
Sorry about that! In other circumstances I might have stuck around. I want to like OM, I want to like Sleep, but so far I haven't been able to get into them. I was really underwhelmed by Al Cisneros's sound and playing. I wanted to love it - it's the Ric with the crazy three pickups and green markers - but it just sounded dull to me - maybe that's what it was supposed to sound like?! (I really don't like to criticize bands - unless they really deserve it lol - these are just my opinions)

Also, there were way more people there for OM - I felt pretty comfortable during ZOMBI - I wore a mask, though many around me weren't - but I just felt better getting out of there when it was packed. I really don't get why there were so many people - their last album came out in 2012 - even the advertising copy for the show was talking about that album.

Oh, I did get to say hi to Steve Moore in the lobby after their set - should have took a picture but the circumstances weren't right.

Al is very into reggae and dub, so he does use those sort of tones sometimes. Om's catalog is fairly diverse (compare the first album to the most recent and it's quite a difference), so maybe skip around a bit if you're so inclined.

As for the number of people, I think Om is just one of those bands that fit the way Jerry described the Dead as being like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like it really like licorice. (I'm paraphrasing obviously.)

I had one of their albums - it's kind of like Sleep, when I sit down to listen, it doesn't do anything for me. But sometimes when I hear it in another context, I'm like, that's cool! So I know that I could like them.

The guy next to me noticed my Cats on Synthesizers in Space t-shirt, so we started talking - turns out he's a synth geek - he said when he saw them the last time the third member had a big modular synth, but this time there was kind of a pile of synths - I didn't realize that had become part of the aesthetic. I should have recorded a little bit more than I did. If it weren't for Covid I'd go to a lot more shows, but at this point I'm being really picky - I'm already thinking about getting a PCR test on Thursday and home text Saturday morning because I'm going to be around people on Saturday and Sunday.
