Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I had one of their albums - it's kind of like Sleep, when I sit down to listen, it doesn't do anything for me. But sometimes when I hear it in another context, I'm like, that's cool! So I know that I could like them.

The guy next to me noticed my Cats on Synthesizers in Space t-shirt, so we started talking - turns out he's a synth geek - he said when he saw them the last time the third member had a big modular synth, but this time there was kind of a pile of synths - I didn't realize that had become part of the aesthetic. I should have recorded a little bit more than I did. If it weren't for Covid I'd go to a lot more shows, but at this point I'm being really picky - I'm already thinking about getting a PCR test on Thursday and home text Saturday morning because I'm going to be around people on Saturday and Sunday.

He was probably referring to Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, who left the band a few years ago or so.

He really is. There also was an old public access type show called New Wave Theater that he obviously pulls from

Did my first real remix for someone other than myself. A band commissioned me to turn a gothy, post punk tune into an electronic tune. Hopefully, they won’t hate it

sleep and om remind me of Minsk the band. Or even cult of Luna…
Minsk are sludge / drones with wall of sound ( and synth) as are cult of Luna… you can’t really listen too it for a 5 min drive to the shops ( probably wouldn’t even finish one song ) but for long car trips / my 45 minute train trip to work it’s awesome background music that’s almost… zen / peaceful in a way

A buddy just did a new video from the latest Snipecatcher record.

That bassline is sick.

Also, to catch up on other stuff:

--I really like Om and Al's bass playing, but I am also a big fan of dub and reggae players. Robbie Shakespeare was a big influence, and later I got into people like Bill Lasswell. But you know, people can like different things.

--I heard back from dad band BL who signed off on everything with just one suggestion for a tweak. He also said, and I quote "I can’t imagine how mind-numbing it must be to still be working on these at a micro-level (even I feel like I never want to listen to them again!)." It is nice that he gets it.

--after Steubig's advice, my wife and I sat down to listen to our tracks, and are super stoked to get stuff done. There is only one that needs any serious "cleanup" and then it's just tracking vocals and the rest of the mixing stuff. Zero arrangement decisions. Our school has this weird half-week "fall break" around Canadian Thanksgiving so we are going to use it as a vacation project this weekend and next week and see how far we get. If the ME sends back the dad rock mixes again, they will just wait.

I all but forgot about the interesting little ambient moments on this album. Mostly the intro and between a few other songs. Lots of echo and reverb. Samples. Nice mood setting.

Starting around 17:45 in this video, Marston does a whole ambient bass metal thing. I'm not a hardcore death metal fan, but this video sold me on this band.

Does that mean you’re in? That Arbhar won’t granulate without something to sample….

I'm a big fan of Marston. He does a fair amount of weird ambient/experimental/noise type stuff if you're interested in that sort of thing. Artists | Colin Marston Omnisound
