Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Okay, fine, I bought a Sloer. B-stock due to very minor paint imperfections, $100 off.

It's either going to be one of those "why did I wait?" things like the Strega, Elmyra 2 etc. or a "I guess I don't need hardware FX after all" thing.

Probably will end up selling the Hypnosis.
hey

please tell us (well me) about the elmyra2. i’ve interested in that or the music thing modular workshop system.

If you're familiar with the Lyra-8, Elmyra is like a digital version of that, plus a super filthy analog fuzz. (You can plug tiny cards into the fuzz to alter its sound -- I'm pretty sure these just have diodes or resistors on them.)

Since it's digital, you can dial in different waveshapes and features (unison detuning, chords, noise, filters etc.) per oscillator, and there's optional quantization for the tuning (12TET or several unusual EDO choices) and a basic sequencer. There's a digital filter and a delay that's somewhat dirty but not quite as much as the PT delay in Lyra. There's a reverb that honestly doesn't do much for it (better to use an external reverb) and digital saturation that can be really aggressive. Modulating the delay has some weird issues due to code that tries to stabilize its really twitchy clock, so don't expect vibrato/chorus/flanger stuff to work super well. There's an external audio input, but it only mixes into the fuzz, you can't process it with the filter or delay.

Setting options on the interface requires a lot of "secret code" key combos -- cheat sheet for that is here, to give you some idea: https://www.neutral-labs.com/elmyra2/downloads/Elmyra2-v2.2-cheat-sheet.pdf I printed a couple of strips on my label printer to stick on the front of the case to remind myself of the important ones. In practice that makes it not too bad. There's also color-coded LEDs for the oscillator type, etc. so if you're colorblind or just really hate those things it might be an issue... personally I just use my ears for it and don't worry about the LEDs.

It definitely does have some overlap with the Lyra. In terms of behavior it's a bit more rational and controllable. In terms of sound, I think it can be noisier/busier/harsher than the Lyra but it doesn't have the really peaky fundamental of the Lyra oscillators, so it seems a bit easier to mix. Sometimes you can keep the fuzz sort of on the edge of chaos, so it doesn't blow out but does add some grit to the sound.

Like the Lyra, it's just sort of fun to play. One of the things I've always liked messing with is polyphony or delay/reverb into distortion, to get different frequencies to collide, and this is basically all about that. (That's what I love about the Strega/Minibrute combo too.)

I have not been using Elmyra as much lately just in the nature of what I've been working on, but talking about it has me wanting to plug it in again...

thanks

it has seemed intriguing when i’ve been looking at it online. like i said, i’m looking at it versus the music thing deal, which seems flexible and small, but doesn’t need any button cheat sheets (which might mean that it’s less flexible in the long run). the mt device is also around the same cost (more ?) for a kit that you have to build (which *might* be fun).

i’m interested in why you seem to have moved away from it a bit.

and i’m all over frequency collisions!

Drone Day 2025 approaches... Hobbits and Moogs beckon...

It was fun getting my Sirin out - it still works! Added some of the MF-109 Saturator Moogerfooger plug-in to the Les Paul Triumph in Reaper to get it to stand out a little more.

Will probably try and record my Drone Day thing tonight to post Saturday since I’m running around all day for work on Saturday…

great, record similar longer one and i add it to droning earth vol82

I think it might be, when I got my Linnstrument I started using that more instead of the touchplate stuff (0-Ctrl and Elmyra). I've been using 0-Ctrl more often for sequences and more rarely as a controller since then, I think.

Sometimes I just turn around and realize I haven't used a particular piece of gear in a while, even though my opinion about that gear hasn't changed. 🤷

Anyway, I recorded with Elmyra last night and I still like it :)

I declare music/song play through a a bane to my existence.
Especially YT shorts!!!!!

So glad I had my major woodshed years pre social media

Off lawn now!!!

Addendum

Same goes for “jams” the are so edited it sounds like guitar pro with musicians that just add tracks to ones the got by email

Miles must be rolling in his grave in cringe

Continuing my adventures in sampling with Native Instruments Maschine. I don’t know why I didn’t start doing this sooner.

Today I tested the auto sample function with my Dreadbox Nyx. I set it to sample from C2 to C3 in single note intervals, with 2 seconds of hold time and 5 seconds of total sample length. It worked like a charm and now I have a basic sample instrument based on my hardware synth.

My goal is to sample some of my basses so I can make a few tracks with bass lines I physically can’t play. I also want to work with some of that robotic sampled feel just to get an idea of how it translates in a song/mix setting.
