Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

She almost sold me on the SA ring control. I’m not sure I’ve got the skills to operate it cleanly, but she makes it look like a bunch of fun.
Sadly they discontinued those! I guess not surprising that not many folks could incorporate something like that, but along with their (also-discontinued) Reflex expression controller I thought it was a pretty innovative idea. It looks like they do still sell the "wired" version on their website, though that would be pretty inconvenient I'd imagine (and maybe only compatible with their own pedals with the 1/8" control input?)

are they a duo that does Godflesh set up witb a drum machine or do they have a drummer?
too lazy to google atm
it hurts just watching her left hand technique, ouch!!!

From the live show videos I’ve seen they are a consistent duo with a rotating drummer. I don’t know how often they change and what gets done in the studio, but I’ve seen two or three different faces behind the kit and they’ve been at it 10+ years. Interviews refer to them as a duo.

I was kind of proud of myself recently - my local GC has a ($5000?!!) Minimoog on the sales floor. Walking in, I pressed a key, and it just gave a short burp. Messed around with it more on my way out (after not purchasing everything, though they had a bunch of basses including some expensive stuff on stands in the middle of the room). It took a little bit - oscillators were all over the place, no sustain, no noticeable filter sound - but I managed to get a to-me-nice bass pedal kind of sound. One of the employees was talking to a friend, I was hoping she'd be like, "wait, did you get that thing to sound good? want to be our Moog consultant?" but of course I was ignored. At least maybe the next person will hit a key, love the sound (I got the glide going too), and drop the 5K!

Oh, and don't forget - this Saturday is DRONE DAY!!! Despite the fact that it is always one of the busiest days of the year for me, I have managed to come up with something the past couple of years. This year thinking I might just do something basic - maybe the Stylophone CPM DS-2 and Moog Sirin as a base and something else on top...

I've started on another project with odd/even rules like the last one. This time:

Odd-numbered tracks can use no FM synthesis (because it's one of my favorite things and I use it all the time...)
Even-numbered tracks can ONLY use FM synthesis, but no delay or reverb. I thought about also saying "no distortion" but I have to have a little fun ;)

Only two tracks in but it's kind of Radiophonic Workshop horror/mystery soundtrack-ish and also kind of angry. Also it's a coincidence, but I used Mutable Instruments Marbles on both tracks without turning the knobs, so maybe I'll pick that up as a rule too.

Not sure if I Drone Day will be another track on this album or something separate... I'll find out when I get there.

I'm guessing that is a sort of makeshift organ pipe he's feeding with a blowtorch? Years ago I saw a video of a sort of calliope organ thing that used burning gasoline instead of steam or air, flames would shoot out of the pipes when the keys were played. I didn't think it sounded very good, but it looked cool I guess.

Drone Day 2025 approaches... Hobbits and Moogs beckon...

It was fun getting my Sirin out - it still works! Added some of the MF-109 Saturator Moogerfooger plug-in to the Les Paul Triumph in Reaper to get it to stand out a little more.

Will probably try and record my Drone Day thing tonight to post Saturday since I’m running around all day for work on Saturday…
