Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I have two. What do you want to know?

a true collector, I love it!!!

I have my 2nd count to 5 on the way to me (got for the ability to use both firmwares). I won’t be chasing all 6 flavors of the 5th anniversary...I’d like to but the collector in me has *some* sense.

Just wanted to say, I haven't been reading this thread much the past week or so - partly with what's going on in the US, my thoughts are elsewhere - but this morning I decided to go back and catch up on about three pages. I read through everything - so interesting! I guess I'm less interested in the gear (trying to work with what I have) and more interested in the stories of you folks and your journeys in music.

Here is one of the pieces that turned me on to drone music - Takahisa Kosugi - he was a member of Fluxus and founder of Taj Mahal Travellers.

(And here's a blog post I wrote about the album)

Thanks again everybody! Oh, also it's fun to realize that I was aware of some of you on other platforms like Instagram.

I kinda read and share on TB to change things up and take my mind of « the world crisis ». If I read the news all day I wouldn’t make it.

I need a break and some release from these extremely hard times. We all do. Even though I find it important to stay well informed.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Stay safe, stay strong.

Thanks, yes, it absolutely makes sense! Actually, this past 4 days I have been playing my bass regularly for the first time in months! The first day, my hands hurt (flatwound LaBellas, not the heaviest gauge but the next heaviest) - I was a little concerned - but I think I'm just out of shape, I've been playing 30-45 minutes each day, playing along with albums (mostly classic r&b/funk stuff) - my fingers are sore when I start but within minutes it goes away. The old "play through the pain" approach, though it's more "play through the ache".

Atta boy!!! Proud of y’a buddie. PM me if you ever need to talk my friend.

I just hope those flats are dead as &*(%. Make em thump, keep it greasy.
:)

Playing along to records. A HUGE , HUGE lack of this among many TB « members ».....IME, IMO....etc......

I certainly understand being distracted. The Los Angeles events in the news aren’t far from my home. I also managed to aggravate my back, making it impossible to play for a while. Sometimes you have to let your mind wander. It’ll return to where it wants to be, or you might discover something new.

thanks, that's cool. because it has (what sounds like) people soloing over the drone, it reminds me of indian music (think tambura drone with violin solo).

p.s. you're in the bay area? la boy here.

if you put the flats on recently to replace lighter rounds, you may need to recalibrate your action/neck tension.

I can listen to Indian music. (North and south....both are very different). Its crazy cool stuff.

But I will never even try enter that room in regards to "playing" it. The stuff is insanely complex. I looked up some kannakol and my mind exploded. Not to mention the microtonal system....those dudes hear fractions of intervals its like super human stuff right there.

I leave that to those born to play it and practice 40 years before becoming master tabla, serengi and sitar musicians.

I bow to those guys. Wow.

What is it/what's it do?

It's a lo-fi modulation pedal which offers a lot of control over the sound. There are 8 different wave-shapes for the LFO, speed and depth (as usual), an LPF, blend control and an additional delay (the two red knobs for time and repeats) which can get really weird. A pretty damn amazing pedal, if you ask me.

Awesome.
You have any audio samples?
Any notable pros/cons?

I don't have anything recorded, rn, but there are some really great demos of it up on Champion Leccy's instagram. I really don't have anything bad to say about this thing. Love it to bits. :D It's been a staple on my pedalboard, since the day I got it.
It's amazingly versatile and can go from very subtle to '***-is-going-on'-levels of weird. :roflmao:

Subharmonicon arrived today...I kinda like it

Dope.

Also I got an awesome deal on a boss dd7 with an mxr tap tempo included.

Wooo.....wait a minute....Since when do I get lucky on deals for equipment.....?!?!?!?

Yes, definitely Indian classical music influenced I believe. Probably Japanese Gagaku influenced as well. Taj Mahal Travellers is such a cool group. (And I'm in Oakland)

Yeah, I did to the best of my abilities - I'm sure the action is higher than a normal person would like, but I like it that way. Truss rod could probably use a tweak but I'm not that motivated. I have the strings as low as they'll go without buzzing too bad.

Sorry for going off multiple tangents when some sujects arise.
Must be annoying......i rarely have the chance to discuss such subjects. Except with myself and my constantly spinning brain.

My apologies.

I think I'm the one who ran things off the rails - how often do flatwounds come up here? But hey - this place has three kinds of music in the title itself!
