Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I would think that laptop should work great. An O=Coast has been on my short list for awhile now. One day I’ll break into the modular thing!

For drone, get a Dreadbox Nyx. Heck, keep an eye out for the Medusa, due later this year. that thing is going to be insane, and priced reasonable for what it is. The Polyend guys built some digital goodness into it. The Superbooth 2018 video about it is mind blowing.

edit - be prepared to need a sequencer for most synths. I'm having good luck with my Novation Circuit.

Glad to see this thread going strong, I need to catch up on the posted music- Been revamping my live setup around an MPC Live so I can leave the laptop at home. I'd love to have things synch with the clock. Is anyone using midi time code enabled effects? I know of the Midi Murf, Zevex makes a Seekwah and Supertrem that are both midi time code capable, anything else out there? I guess the Line 6 multi effects stuff is also...

My only MIDI effects box is the Pigtronix Infinity looper. I did discover that it will take MIDI commands other than the clock. I attached an Arturia Beatstep to it, assuming only the clock data would pass through, but the step pitch data would alter the pitch of the audio in the loop. My gift to you. Use it wisely :)

Thanks, yup I had an Infinity for a while, it was great (well, I didn't like the erase function). I'll be using the looper in the MPC for the loop stuff that has to be synch'd. Basically, I'm looking to utilize the effects loop built into a Plus pedal and through synch'd step sequenced filtering create arp type movements with key dictated by whatever is grabbed by the Plus.

Sorry, I’m missing something. Plus pedal ?

[EDIT] Sorry, found it,made the mistake of assuming no-one would call a pedal just ‘plus’.

Sounds a lot like the Alexander colour theory pedal. There are probably better sequencers for your application though, I don’t know much about them.

The Medusa is amazing! I’d get one, but for the time being, I only use samples I make with my bass, but CV out to a modular thing is of interest. The Synthstrom Deluge is on my radar, possibly instead of the Digitakt. Torn between that, or a new MPC Live/X. I really love the Elektron Octatrack, but that learning curve is scary.

I’m thinking of doing an iPad based setup. An iPad is a lot cheaper than almost any synth and they are sounding really good now.

There’s so much cool stuff for iPads now it’s silly! I use a few apps quite a bit and really love em. Mainly Patterning, Samplr, Tardigrain and Soundscaper. I usually just start with something like that, then load it into a sampler. I still find iPads a bit too fussy to work with exclusively. Maybe I need an iPad Pro :)

Was torn between the Digitakt and the MPC...really want an MPC X, but that’s a lotta dough and they’re pretty large to take on the road

Yeah I am trying to avoid too much gear and modular systems as well (The X having cv out was a very tempting selling point), although it has the options I'm looking for- it is too large/ fragile/ damn expensive... The digikat doesn't have enough outs for my needs, awesome machine though! Can't beat the touch screen on the MPC...up to 6 hour battery... expandable memory... sequencing external synths etc. has been a breeze. The integration into Ableton is awesome as well.

Started playing around with the filters and settings on my Nyx. I got pretty deep into routing, when my neighbor tested to ask if I was conduction military-grade sonic torture tests :) I think I might've come close to the elusive brown note.

That Alexander is interesting. I've not seen one before.

Is anyone here routing their audio into a DAW and plug-ins for real time live performances?

Before I pulled the trigger on the Digitakt, my main apprehension was the lack of connectivity, but a friend insisted I check em out and loaned me his for awhile and it’s just a great little machine for the dough and for some of the things I like to do. It won’t be my only box and at this point, the MPC Live is at the top of my list. For now, my Digitakt, iPad, EHX 95000 looper and some pedals does a fair amount of damage :)

The setup I'm moving away from is Universal Audio Apollo coupled with Ableton/ MacBook Pro as the central host for processing, effects, sequencing and synths. Ableton providing wet- only signal and getting amp emulation/ front end processing via the UA platform. Have had success touring that rig, but the biggest problem with that type of system is latency... the UA direct is fine, only 1.5 ms but the effects routed from daw can get to be a drag, too noticeable especially if using soft synths in real time which requires even higher buffers.
Moving back to analog summing mixer, the MPC and external sound modules. A big part of what I'm doing is dub mixing once building a foundation of loops etc, which is far more satisfying out of the box despite a bit larger kit to haul. Digital controllers also have the latency issue which makes the response slower, then navigating pages for control parameters, routing of effects to each other on the fly... the amount of controllers needed for the immediacy of a heavily improvised set trumps the format when adding in the aforementioned latency/ timing issues of such a rig, for me.

Sounds cool! Got any new recordings?
