Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

In other news, I think my mini-board has been a colossal disappointment.
Here's what I have, so far.
Dunlop Mini Vol pedal (which is really cool)
EBS Octave (whatever the latest one is)
Keeley Dynomyroto (chorus/flange/rotary)
Eno Fuzz (a cheapie)
NUX Konsequent digi delay (40 bucks, but does the job - basic, clean delay)-
Mooer A7 Ambient verb
Ditto looper.
"Small" and "quality" seem to be rare. Tried the Mooer Soul Shiver (chorus/vibe/rotary) - useless, barely there. Then, just got that Mooer D7, their ambient delay. Has some cool presets, and a few crap ones - their 'lo-fi' preset adds something that I think is supposed to be a ring mod, but sounds like a loud mosquito, till you reach a point where noise just kicks in, full blast and is utterly useless. Sent those back. The A7 has some decent sounds on it but it also has the mosquito preset, and I'm still trying to get a 'regular' reverb tone dialed in - I think I'll be able to. My whole point was to make an ambient board with mini pedals. there just ain't enough good mini pedals to do it. Yeah, I can stack some delays and such, but it's pretty lacking. So instead, I'm gonna just make this my gig board for non ambient stuff.
I went back to the effects pedal stuff on the iPad. Ended up getting one called Tonestack, way better than Bias or Amplitube. Ended up getting some nice ambient patches made, last night. So when I wanna do soundscapes on the mountain, I just gotta throw my iPhone and the little iRig in the bag, lot better than dealing with a board. But jeez, I've wasted a bit of money, thinking I could pull it off with minis. For the most part, the best pedals on the board aren't mini.

That's a bummer, but sometimes you have to try just to know.
BUT this leads to another question: what do you use to get sound from your bass into the iPad, and out of your iPad into a speaker?
Tried em all. Never got what I wanted with virtual boards.
Latency was always an issue.

i tried a couple of effects things on ipad. my ipad2 wasn’t up to the task, but turnado and the one that adrian belew was involved in (forget the name) did some pretty interesting stuff, as you could program lfo control (etc.) of certain parameters.
might be worth investigating them?

Pigtronix has some decent mini options these days. The three they just dropped look good.

Been messing around with virtual setups in my laptop too. I can do zero latency if I go in through a Sansamp, and then I get all the ambient effects I ever wanted. But of course what I really want is the virtual pedalboard with no direct monitoring so I can really FSU. I have never managed to get it working with Ableton...something about its plug-in delay compensation just doesn’t work for me—even at 32 I hear audible delay. But there is no problem in Bitwig or Logic. At least for messing around. If I were syncing up to a digital drum track, I would probably still direct monitor. This has me curious about what an iPad can do at this point (for travel, so not urgent!)
On the synth side, I have lately been thinking a lot about what I want the modular/hardware for and what is best done in the box. I have long wanted hardware granular but it just doesn’t ever do as much as I can do ITB. Probably because I’ve been working that way for 20 years. Ditto for drum programming. I just love Numerology and have lately really been into physical modelling synths. Even with the Vector sequencer and Plaits it’s just slower going in hardware. Maybe I’d dig a proper digital drum device with lots of knobs and MIDI but it seems it’s more of a hassle than it’s worth. OTOH, there are a few hardware pieces that really don’t have software equivalents, and of course anything with an interface that just makes sense is a wonderful thing. So I’m going to focus on that. I’m picking up a Grendel drone commander Euro version (and have and love the old ammo can), and that and the 4ms Ensemble oscillator will be my main hardware sound generators — there is nothing else like them in hardware or software and I really like them both.
Speaking of great software, there is a new version of Gleetchlab. It’s like 20 Euro and it’s basically like a Max or Reaktor patch on steroids. Really well thought out, granular and spectral time stretching built in, and VST hosting. I fired it up Monday and already made a great soundscape with it. You can download a demo which has an annoying 8 minute expiration but it’ll give you a sense. You may need to RTFM though.

Since my 76 Pbass is retired, I went on the hunt for another set of jazz pickups since its my only standard tuned instrument now.
I want to get more versatile with it.

So many terms describing sounds that mean nothing and charts that are beyond confusing.
Add to that demos that you can see the amp in the back with the EQ changing with every pickup set.
I want to get more versatile with it.

Slightly higher output than vintage 7.5k.
Single coils, Not split\humbcukers (never found a set I liked, tried many....but if once exists.....I’m all ears)
Constancy between string “volume” (VERY VERY important)
The less mid scoop the better.
I can sacrifice for top en sizzle for more thickness and definition in low mids and lows.
I dont care about brands, I use whatever works.
My Fenders are almost perfect, maybe I’d like a little thicker bass and more output.
I use a boss LMB-3 as a volume boost for it without compression.
Almost pulled the trigger on some aguilars, but noticed in the demos, the EQ changed all the time and they running everything into a REDDI. Order canceled.
