Hulu doc on Zappa is entertaining. I don’t like his music but the story and his ideas are interesting.
I'm not a J pickup connoisseur--I do my cork sniffing with humbuckers. But the Bill Lawrence/Wilde J sounds like a good bet. I would describe it as Fenderish but "more" and it's not stupid expensive. Output isn't super hot though. And cheap. OTOH, it may be hum cancelling.
G&L is making noises about a standard J-shaped MFD. I love the MFD sound, which I think is much more varied and variable than usually credited on TB.
We actually watched it because neither of us like his music but we have lots of friends who do. We found one or two songs we liked, and it was an interesting doc.
Still waiting on those jazz sized MFD pups. I definitely think I’m going to pull the trigger on those.
ETA isn’t announced yet I think??? (I may be wrong.)
But really, the Fender cs 60s I have now are freakin awesome. I just fell down the rabbit hole of trying to fix something that wasn’t broken.
Will check out the Bill L also. Thank you.
Édit: just did, they’re splits plus have raised pole A and D poles......to much of a gamble for me.
Only one that was of interest where the Nordy NJ4SV pour they are a bit $$.
I’ll stop shopping pickups like a loser and just play.
And then shop for stereo pedals for my SP tape manipulation set up.

Huge Zappa fan. Not as much of a fan of the person as I used to be, though.

Dig the music more than the lyrical satire, but there was a time I enjoyed the lyrics, too.
Most of Zappa's lyrics are awesome to a 15 year old boy and cringy as all hell# as one gets older. I mostly like the instrumental stuff.
Always was just a casual Zappa listener.
Waka Jawaka and Grand Wazoo are pretty much the 2 I still like.

to this 14- 17-year-old, he was pretty great. introduced a lot of music to a lot of us. whole tone scales! i was at the concert that became “just another band from l.a.” saw “200 motels” in the theater when it came out. and that was the beginning of the end for me. seemed like his varese idolatry had become plagiarism to my ear. (saw it recently, it’s a self-indulgent mess to my sensibilities.)
i have friends who have played with don preston and bunk gardner. they report that those guys contributed a lot to the writing and fz took the credit and the $$. a lot of bitterness there.
but, ya know, “hot rats,” “waka jawaka” and “grand wazoo” have some great music.
and i heard some of “absolutely free” the other day and the music and concept were good (lyrics i used to like seemed terrible to me now).
but i have friends who adore him and vaclav havel seemed to like him, so who am i to judge?

Anyone here subscribe to Night Flight Plus? I’m considering it, and they look to have some potentially interesting docs and music based movies (Devo, history of punk, etc.). It’s a lot of B-Movie and exploitation and horror stuff. It isn’t crazy expensive so I’m tempted to give it a try for a while.
That lower horn looks like it's one accidental knock away from breaking off.
I heard Hot Rats as a kid and it just didn't connect with me, so I never really investigated further. Really high level music with a humor that doesn't interest me...but playing that music must have been a blast!zappa.

some of it really was part of the zeitgeist.
peaches en regalia is some really nice writing, imo.
What a coincidence, I just started listening to FZ again a week or so ago. When I was 11-12, my dad's co-worker found out I was interested in guitar, so he gave me a tape with John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton - on the flip side was Zappa Live at Fillmore East 1971 (Mudshark, etc.) - he told my dad "you might want to censor the other side" but my dad either didn't hear him or just ignored him, so I got to listen to some pretty perverted stuff! Ended up with almost all the official albums on vinyl, then CD, through the Yellow Shark. There's stuff that I love and stuff that I hate from every era and every band! Right now I'm listening to Uncle Meat (with the strange ditties, the musique concrète, the spoken segments), over the weekend it was One Size Fits All (trying to play along with "Andy" on bass), last week it was Hot Rats - I also didn't really get it at first, but I've come to love it - Max Bennett is great, and Paul Humphrey is a great drummer - I wonder if he's related to Ralph Humphrey who played on Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe (') and Roxy & Elsewhere...
Not to mention its freakin Shuggie Otis on bass!!!!!!
I still feel the knock out blow from hearing Inspiration Information the first time.
One of the greatest records ever.
