Up way too late working on a track that is making me laugh way too hard. It’s not ambient, but I’m exploring some basic production areas that could pay dividends down the road.

Also, don’t break your toe if you can avoid it. 2/10, would not recommend.

Broke a toe about 2 years ago just going up the basement stairs.
Double open fracture with the nail flying off and a pool of blood. I have pics to prove it. 8 hours at the hospital to reset the bone and stop the blood.

The triage nurse literally said: “Ewwwwww”

The fail is strong in this one.

Genres, man. I hate it.

Too punk for the jazz heads
Too hip hop for the the rock dudes.
Too knowledgeable for the stoners.
Too weird for the "normals".
Too black metal for the classic snobs.
Too jazz for the Dub rastas.
Turntabalism isn't an instrument , ok now these are fighting words !!!!!!

Later on there is some of it I like, but much of it seems like the musical equivalent of pro wrestling to me.

I've said this about metal, more broadly. It's the posing/tuff guy aesthetic/50 year old dudes dressing up like it's Halloween thing that really just turns me off. I've nearly gotten murdered for saying so.

That was silly, too. I don't think that came across in the music, though, the way the tuff guy silliness does in metal.

That tuff guy silly crap is only a tiny tiny tiny part of it. Have you seen Danzig playing tuff guy and getting ko3d the eff out!!! Epic.
But there are douchebags regardless of genre.

I've met way more cool people in punk, underground, metal venues than any jazz joints.

Worst is hip hop shows, ouch.....the crowds are scum....sorry......almost got my @$$ beat up after a Ghostface show just for asking what what time it was.
Love hip hop, hate the hip douche swag fans.

Take ANY so called genre and odds are I only like small portions of each one, so do I not like music? Most of my favorite music doesn’t sit easily into any category.

I get the same vibe from the Prog heads. They seem to classify records with the right wine to accompany it.

The prog/fusion thing was pretentious and annoying. The elitsm vibe in some of these genres doesn't bother me as much, as I think it's coming from a more intellectual than emotional appeal, and a lot of music clicks in my brain in that way, more than emotional. But I can completely understand the turnoff. Some music does not appeal to the masses, and I'm okay with that.

It is all good.
I should say, I was already a curmudgeon in my 20's, so the 'fun' aesthetic's never been a big appeal to me, in general. I'm not generally uptight, but I'm a pretty serious person, to a fault. I still have a hard time describing why music clicks with me. My total apathy about lyrics, for example, is one of the things that makes it difficult. By and large, I've never cared about what people sing about, in terms of emotional resonance, even in the music I like. I'm a weirdo with this stuff, and I can't even figure myself out.

I realized this at a concert and it changed my ideas about wanting to be in a “successful” band. I couldn’t imagine how many fans must be people you’d never want to meet. I mean, I hate a good number of the people I like

I’ve always found the metal tough guy posturing pretty dopey too and often love the satan metal stuff for the wrong reasons. It just cracks me up.
I remember playing a festival in the northern most part of Norway. Had to fly from Oslo and on the plane were a bunch of these 9 foot tall viking metal dudes. My attitude toward these guys was to dismiss them as a bunch of dummies, but I was pleasantly surprised to find they totally got the joke and didn’t take themselves seriously at all. That was a fun trip hanging out with some of those guys

I didn't get into newer metal (including "nu metal") for the longest time because I grew tired of all the hardcore tough guy posturing thing that pervades the music and the scene. Everyone trying to out-heavy everyone else and so on. Fans who are looking for a fight. Later on there is some of it I like, but much of it seems like the musical equivalent of pro wrestling to me.

Some of this came up in the Death doc I watched. They talked about how Chuck saw the end of the line for escalating the brutality sound/image and the silliness of being brutal 24/7. I see a lot of this in modern rap/trap. Everyone is a bigger thug than the next guy with more money/cars/drugs and is a sexual superhero. I look at it and think of how the hair metal scene escalated and eventually dwindled singing the same story about partying. Like, haven’t you guys seen how this ends?

I've have some friends from Norway, and I know a couple of Finns (another brutal metal country). I think it can be hard to tell that they're in on the joke because they aren't "American" about it. They have different expressions and body language, and other communication styles that can make them seem much more serious than they are. It's deceptive, and they can seem equally "flat" telling you something horrific or hilarious. I think that adds to their "cred" but is misinterpreted.

I was definitely guilty of loving some "pro wrestling music" and the imagery and personality. I've aged into a place where the facelessness of ambient and EDM feels like a better fit. My days of costumes and mosh pits are behind me, but I had fun while it lasted.
