Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Do you just mess around with the Essence till you get something you like or have you actually learned something about multi-op FM? I'm in the messing around stage.

I’d love to think I’ve learned a bit! But sure, it’s mostly messing around until
I find something cool. The EssenceFM makes it easy to stumble around

I spent yesterday tracking bass parts. Now my back is killing me. Fuuudge.

This was supposed to be a minimal thing using short bass loops but I kept creeping back to recording longer sections. I’m finding that certain song sections work better with short loops repeating, while others work with a single longer recording.

This evening was spent editing and arranging bass parts. Anything to avoid cutting vocals :)

I'm finding the same with ID700, which I've been really enjoying. It is just a little fiddly on my iPad screen. Yesterday I hooked up my Linnstrument and tried to understand what modulations might be useful to control. I started reading a couple books on FM synthesis but they aren't really helping.

In other news, I have been fascinated by the complex LFO in the Lyra-8. It's an old idea from modular but not one I've ever spent any time figuring out. The first thing I did was download a couple software emulations of Lyra-8, and this morning I worked with Lira-8 to produce this:

Then I walked over to my modular and tried to patch my Maths to match the complex LFO...and got something I liked a lot less. So more reading for me (and I posted a query on Lines, where people seem to know what they are doing with this stuff).

PS -- for those of you with iPads, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is the closest thing in iOS, but the LFO is slightly less interesting.

From the basement day 5 of 10

That was cool, keep it up. Complex LFO on the lyra.....yessir.
Im still doing takes with the Lyra, lots of crap and some good. Hard to keep a constant evolving idea and still remain fresh. More work, more takes, more failure.
(Not sharing, might drop something before 2030 with that thing and dont want to bore guys you half to death :) )

Ah, eternal discontent FTW.

side note:
All those YT vids of that instrument are soooooo full of it. All knobs at zero basically making it drone simple tuned notes.
OFF LAWN NOW!!!!

Lol. I mean, it's okay to play tuned notes too, it's just the thing can obviously do a lot more.
You're 100% right. I agree. I will explore that fo shizzle, its part of what it can do.
BUT!!!!!!!........every single thing I hear is the same $%?& thing. Blade runner with a Reverb pedal after the Lyra, when the instrument itself can generate a reverb with the delay Matrix.
Add the fact when those drones are generated, they select a LFO setting setting where the voices cant talk between each other with cross modulation (or something like that) IMO thats a huge part of the instrument.

again, OFF LAWN NOW!!!!!!
:)

again, OFF LAWN NOW!!!!!!

This is part of my frustration with the available information about synths online. It's so much better to hear them in actual music made by actual musicians. I have some idea of how some of the synths will sound, but the demos are so utterly limited and tend to lean into one part of an instrument in isolation, or one thing it can do well.

fm: the iridium is pretty useful in understanding it, i think. it’s good to see how the operators act in conjunction with each other. sine waves (or other) modulating sine waves.

complex lfo in maths: might need something to modulate the primary lfo? (you’re probably already doing this—don’t forget i’m very newbie to the modular thing … take pity.)

Sorry for the rant btw, it just peeves me off when pseudo experts show how something works with such limited knowledge and show a tiny spectrum of said instrument.
Hey, whatever turns your crank, if they have fun all good with me.

Dunning Krueger FTW??

Not saying Im better than anyone by any means, hey im just another loser working on his shizzle thinking he should quit for the past 25 years.

Maybe this isolation thing is making me go even more Loco??
;)

ha. yeah. i’ve really been peeved when i see people doing gear reviews who are allegedly “great players” that are just terrible (some of whom talked down to me on tb). (which brings up, “what is a great player?”)

No apologies @ugly_bassplayer ! I love your rants, especially with respect to what can, and cannot, be on your lawn.

OMG this is exactly the problem. Also, it is ****ing ridiculous that any bass player would talk down to your @steubig.

I long since stopped watching bass reviews. I am sure I have complained about Steve Arujo's demos somewhere upthread. I just don't hear people play like I play, and often their playing gives almost no information about how the instrument would sound in context. OTOH, I think a so-so player can do a great review if they just let you hear the tone of the instrument. But even there it's hard because of bass being bass.

Synths are a little different in that they can be solo instruments. But even here, the information is limited. Nick Batt is great because he programs a bunch of sounds for his reviews but he also has a very particular musical taste and style. Loopop's entire musical output appears to be the music for his reviews (ditto for Knobs). I'm not dissing them at all-they are obviously brilliant at what they do, it's just not musical information I can use. But because synths and pedals have interfaces, their skill as teachers is quite useful in explaining what something can and cannot do.

Looking forward to the "great player" discussion. I am not sure I know what one is anymore, but I sure do know what I like and don't like! (Insert lawn joke here.)

reviews:

the nick batts and loopops of the world are valuable because they have a good understanding of things and can dig in and show how a synth works. as @JES says, they give you and idea of the possibilities and then you can decide if they *might* work for you.

i appreciate that those guys are pretty straightforward, without stoner vibes (you know of whom i speak). i also like sarah-belle reid’s sense of wonder/enthusiasm coupled with extensive knowledge.

@JES

it wasn’t about my playing. it was about a comment i made about a piece of gear that we both owned (and loved). he was pretty patronizing—and i’m not down with that at all (particularly if you’re just an adequate corporate band player—and, yes, that does show my ego).

You think I’m adequate?! THANKS!
I think you’re crazy good :)

I rarely watch bass reviews unless it's a 2nd-hand instrument being sold that I'm considering making an offer on...but even then (or especially then) it seems like no one understands how to present an instrument as a blank slate, or a Palette of Potential® ...instead it's their opportunity to wank aimlessly and/or fire off their favorite licks. Hey Doogie, howzabout playing some whole notes? Or simple walking quarter notes at a modest tempo? Something that lets me hear the instrument independent of your tastes and talents?

And how come the guys selling the gazillion dollar Alembics always suck? :::ducks:::
