Ampeg Isovent - Jack Plate Circuit Board.

If all else fails, just gut the IsoVent completely and hide a good speaker cabinet inside of it. Then you are using the IsoVent as you seem determined to do, but it will actually perform well. You know...the old 'two birds; one stone' trick.

I considered that option, but it didnt make sense because the Isovent is already a cabinet, and this simply meant making the Isovent cabinet work - more properly.

I have a suggestion for your Avatar

Well you Mo Frapies, Isovent ReWiring Job complete.

The F Bomb is gone.

My friend used two Switch Jacks, which means the second way was used, which means if I plug an amp into either of the jacks, this places the Isovent into Full Mode, but if I plug into both jacks at the sametime, this places the Isovent into Bi-Amp Mode.

I didn't want to tell you about the Jack Switching until we were certain it was going to work.

Now Mo Frapies, what Sayeth You Now?

Let's hear it!!!

What Bovine and Squat to you have for me now?

One point, NOT only was the Crossover Removed, but they did find within the Isovent a Cap Filter, which was also Removed, and aside from the new Switch Jacking arrangement, we just straight ReWired the Isovent with No Extra Circuitry at all.

How is that!!!

Let's hear the Rubbish and Bovine now.

Where was the "cap filter" and what was its purpose? What did it look like? How was it mounted in the cab?

Dude,
Nothing-
Nothing in that electronics swap had anything to do with your F bomb unless it was structural. The actual movement of electrons was not the source of your issue.

You showing a pic (and another pic and another pic...ad nauseum) of the circuitry your buddy pulled out of the isovent does nothing to show that was the fix , nevermind that it was the problem.

the Don Quixote of pointless bass cabs .... you have tilted at this Isovent windmill for over 700 posts, and just like D.Q. you arrive at your destination no wiser than you began ... and just as defiant and ignorant ... and in love with your darling Isovent (Dulcinea?)

enjoy your cab.

Okay here is my Honest Opinion.

After testing an Ampeg Folded Horn last weekend, which seemed to be a little Intense around C3, basically what I think is, these cabinets aren't perfect, and maybe relative to Better Balanced gear, it becomes a bit more noticable when the sound either diminishes or intensifies in these older cabs.

Yes the removal of the circuitry seems to have done something, but in all Honesty, this Isovent seems to be a little E and F Centric, with a bit of added vibrancy in this region, and after the past week or so, I have gotten to the point where I just Don't Give a Crap Anymore.

It is just the way these cabs are.

When initially testing, I used the Mesa Walkabout with all EQ settings at the 12 O'clock, and yes the Isovent seemed somewhat more balanced, but I will be Honest in saying, the Es and Fs do ringout with a bit of unusual vibrancy than with maybe more normal cabinets.

So you guys Win, anyway to a degree, but NOT entirely because the removal of the circuitry did have an effect, and the Isovent does seem a little more balanced than before.

What is the upshot of all this?

Besides taking some flak from you guys, and learning something useful, what exactly I don't know, I have sort of an idea of what I am going to do going forwards.

You guys kept recommending a Parametric EQ and HPF.

As it happens, the Rolls Parametric has both, and for a minimal investment, I can get one of these, and use it.

I probably will.

Now remember the Walkabout has a Semi Parametric EQ, which I quickly adjusted towards giving me an idea of what to do, but the Rolls offers a far greater amount of surgical precision, so after taking care of something in the very near future, I will get a Rolls RPQ and try that.

Maybe later on I will try using one of these advanced new digital power amps just as a learning toy.

I sometimes do this.

For having around the house, or maybe taking it over to a friend's place for practice, the Isovent will work well.

Given this experience, one thing this Isovent has done is to further develop Keener Ears, which means I will probably be a much harder sell when considering plunking down some serious money on Some Serious New Gear.

I will admit many of these Newer Speaker Sound Systems are better balanced, and via new advancements via digitial control, have produced newer capabilities which I think maybe many today just take for granted. In other words, when something sounds good - nobody notices, but it is only when something sounds Bad that people tend to notice, and this actually becomes a good useful learning tool for Developing Ears.

As it stands now, the Isovent is here at home with my wife and I, as currently dialed in sounds good, and it actually tends to bring out a good quality of my bass when playing through it.

After this exhaustive week to 10 days with all if you, I am just NOT going to sweat it, I think as dialed in it sound reasonably good, and currently I have some important Irons in the Fire to attend to.

You will be surprised.

As to the Switch Jacks, for Safety's Sake, more than anything else, my friend chose to use one Switch Jack, and NOT two, so that NO Accidents happen. If one plugs into the right most jack, the Isovent is put into Full Mode, and if plugged into the left jack, the the Isovent it put into Sub only Mode, and in this way there is always a load that the amplifier will see.

And that's it. I now have my basic ol' Isovent, and aside from playing around with a Para EQ, and probably maybe down the road, with a more advanced digitial amplifier, this is our Isovent.

I have been playing the Isovent for a while, and I like it, but remember, even though I can dial out the E and F via the Mesa's Semi Parametric, if I roll in some bass, then the dialed out E and F tends to get rolled back in, and probably one advantage to using the Roll RPQ is I can dial out, or dial down the E and F, but also I can keep it out or down, and then NOT re-roll the E and F back in when dialing in more bass.

So after taking care of the next thing I will probably get the Rolls RPQ.

Anyway, for what it is, I am liking this Isovent, and for a household Isovent, it's doing well.

For the time being, I will give it a while, before considering a more serious investment in something like the Genzler system. I am NOT a gigging musician yet and there is No Rush to get a Genzler.

Also realize, this gear is just going to continue to get better and better, so what could be the Mega Amazing thing today, could be supplanted and replaced by as of yet the next most Mega Amazing thing of tomorrow, so I am NOT worried about it.

It all will just keep getting better and better.

However I have got my eye on the Genzler.

By the way, if you guys don't like my Green Rug, Too Bad, it was here when we moved in, we do have another replacement rug, and I just haven't gotten around to changing the rugs, so Too Bad.

There's already a parametric eq on your amp, duplicating with the Rolls won't get you anything (but I don;t think the amp is a good choice for that box for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

That circuitry had nothing to do with anything remaining in the box, it was only connected to the tweeter which you had already removed. If your buddy can't grasp this concept, he's no tech.

Congrats on getting it back together and having it sound better. That’s a good feeling. Maybe the EQ/HPF will get you the rest of the way there, but even if not, it sounds like you have the right attitude to have fun with it as is. Good deal!

Thank You.

I appreciate it.

I am definitely liking it even though it isn't perfect, and in a way this saga is coming to a close.

However I will continue to making postings here because of up coming events.

Actually I chose the Mesa because I wasn't really using it for anything, my Ampeg can more readily dial out the F Bomb, and the Mesa seemed to be a little bit more ruthless in bringing out the F Bomb, which meant a more Honest testing of the Isovent.

Besides the Mesa, I have an Ampeg and a GK.

Which amp would you recommend?

Each amp has their own character.

And yes the Mesa does roll out the remains of the F Bomb, but when I roll in some bass, sort of reconstitutes the F Bomb, so maybe the combination of the Mesa's Semi Parametric and Rolls RPQ will work?

Yes or No?

No, has NOTHING to do with the honesty of the amp, it has to do with the engineering behind the amp and the particular resonant quirk of the cabinet. It's the wrong amp for that kind of cabinet.

My guess is that much of the problem will disappear with the GK.

No, because the root cause is the amp's inability to control the high Q, high amplitude resonance of the cabinet.

I see.

Okay then tomorrow I will try the GK.

Going to bed.

Have to be up early.
