Ampeg SGT-DI

I just received an SGT-DI as well, I really like it so far but I'm not sure the compressor is working. I haven't seen it engage once, or, I haven't seen the yellow light come on once in the few days that I messed with it. I don't see an on/off switch so I imagine it's just always there.

I have to be missing something...Any advice?

No on/off, just a level knob. So I leave mine on zero, which is off. I prefer the Ampeg OptoComp pedal since it has more knobs making it easier to dial in exactly what you want. I use it at minimum settings, more of a tone shaper than a comp.

I get that completely, I have a Keeley Bassist Comp before it that I really like, I just want to know if the one on the pedal works or if I'm doing something wrong.

Has anyone had any trouble with the XLR-out on their SGT?

Starting this past Sunday, the output from the XLR-out was really distorted and low. My rig stays mainly stationary at church, so I don't think anything could have been damaged. Thankfully the 1/4" outs don't seem to be affected, so it's something with the XLR-out specifically.

I've already submitted a ticket to Ampeg to see if they may have any suggestions.
Did you ever hear back from them? I noticed something similar last night, more of a low output into my Scarlett. And I had the volume knob at about 2-3:00. Gonna play around some more but my Tone Hammer has much more output for sure.

Hey I hope you're still around! I just got the SGT DI and I'm wondering what's the best way to string a phaser and delay? From your photos it looks like the DI is the last box in your chain, but I can imagine with modulation pedals this would not be ideal. Do you happen to know if I can just run my two pedals from the line out to the amp? SGT DI - line out - phaser - delay - amp? I'm having a really hard time figuring out the best way to do this without buying anymore gear.

Just spent an hour or so trying the SGT on my small church board.

The good… if this is your only piece of gear, or if you have minimal other FX, I can see how this could be your answer. Some really great tones in this unit. The included cab sims have good variety, I settled on the 810 with lows and highs ON. The dirt channel has some nice sounds. Octaver, chorus and delay/reverb are ok before the SGT (only choice anyway) but not perfect. In all, I think it is a good unit. Having gone from MXR M-80 to Darkglass Microtubes Infinity to Two Notes ReVolt, I would probably put it on par with the ReVolt.

The not so good, for me at least…

DI output very low, input trim/gain at 24 dB minimum. Requires some EQ tweaking to bring back some clarity and midrange with some cab sims. For example I like the 810 because it has some clear highs but it is a bit scooped. The 410 has a thicker mid that is slightly low-mid boxy and slightly less highs, which could be an illusion. Some tweaking here might get me closer. But I would possibly need to tweak a user cab sim to get just a little more spank back. Not a huge problem compared to the Two Notes ReVolt. I don’t want to push treble beyond about 2 o’clock.

I find the drive channel is nice and thick but it doesn’t have much bite unless I mess with the mids overall, which changes my clean tone. The drive channel does go into a pretty nice fuzz territory. I am 50/50 here.

The big problem for me is no FX loop. The SGT does not seem to play well with others for two reasons. Firstly I am battling the clean channel overdriving the cab sim, then I am seriously battling this problem with other pedals like drives or octaves before the SGT. So I lower the overall volume and then I need to be > 24 dB gain on the mixing desk.

Secondly, other FX into the SSGT with the drive ON are not so great. The drive gets gluggy and chorus/delay/reverb are less clear. Also an octave before the drive was very muddy and low end really blows out. Plus the cab sim is then distorting crazily.

I will need to lower the levels on my other pedals to soften the blow before the SGT. It seems odd to need to do this.

I have ordered a DSM Humboldt Simplifier Bass Station so I can get some reference. At the end of this week I hope to be somewhere, with one unit
Can't you put the modulation pedals after the line out? SGT - line out - delay - phaser - amp? I'm trying to figure out how to connect/order my delay and phaser, and it's not so easy apparently.

I fiddled with the cab sims cuz I was a little bored with my tone. Cab sims were as uninspiring as when I first got the pedal. It's pilot error; I've not found a likeable consistent tone. So I read this thread (again) and about how guys were putting an Edison before the SGT. Why not my Source Audio Zio Preamp? What's the worst that can happen? Turns out that nothing bad It kinda gave the SGT more life ot something even with the Zio controls mainly at noon. Both the Zio and SGT are fantastic on their own imo but together, supreme. YMMV.

I seem to be having some problems with my SGT. Wondering if anyone here has had similar issues.

The output from the main line out is quite low and noisy but the preamp out sounds fine. And when I engage the SGT circuit it looses almost all volume just barely audible which happens on both outputs. It was fine the last time I used it but suddenly seems to have soiled itself.

The SGT circuit has its own level control. You should be able to set it at unity gain when it's engaged.

New colorway!

Does anybody here have both an SGT-DI and Venture series amp? I know it's essentially redundant, not counting the cab sim options. If yes, what use cases do you have for each?

My main consideration would be for recording or gigging, so I can get the tone I want through the clubs' backlines. I use the Venture for rehearsals when I have to bring my own gear.

Anyone know if the SGT-DI manual is correct (or a typo?) saying the treble EQ AND the Ultra Hi are both centered at 8k? That’s unlike Ampeg’s typical EQ arrangement, afaik, and seems needlessly redundant. Treble at 4k, Ultra Hi at 8k would seem to make more sense, and is in fact what the Venture amps have. ???

Ampeg SGT-Di VS Ampeg B15(B18)

I love Jo Choui's work…

I think doing comparison tests with bass rolled off on rounds (or with flats) it's like carpet-covered stereo speaker listening test. Not to mention B15 with modern cab (where B15 sound is 80% the cab as the circuit is pretty basic transparent RCA preamp copy from 50s). Does not really make any sense doing that. I mean, IMHO of course

This guy did great job testing the pedal as you can hear all the frequencies (and it sounds great imho), pick, fingers, Pbass, Jbass, tone stack 100%. It's all here minus compraison to a real B15

Anyone have experience gigging with an Ampeg SGT-DI through a PA?

Can you switch the compressor off?

Anyone use fuzz pedals with it?

Considering pulling the trigger on either this or the TwoNotes Revolt Bass, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The compressor is on a pot, and I just leave it off (I use an outboard LA-2A pedal). I have an Earthquaker Blumes and a EH Bass Big Muff before the SGT in my chain and they are fine.

Unlike my Tone Hammer, the SGT's DI output seems weaker since I was asked to turn up the volume a couple times with it. Notwithstanding that, its a great pedal with some awesome tones that play well with a PA system. I love classic rock and Motown and it covers both of those great! Kinda wish I waited for the new cool classic blue version that just came out......
