UPDATE... The new tube fixed the distortion problem. And yes, a JJ ECC83 is what was in there. So all is good and I'm back up and running. Thanks to Jimmy and everyone else for your help.

Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Club

So I picked up a 7pro as part of a trade. I always liked these but because of the issues I kept hearing about, I stayed away.
I was told mine had the most current update. Which it did not. Rev G on the board. With the ICE2A165 chip in U2 spot. So ended up buying the ICE2A265 chip and performing the upgrade myself. This is the chip that appears to fry in these.

Wasn't too tough. I do have a fair amount of electronics repair experience though. And Mouser had the chip for a couple of bucks. If you aren't skilled at soldering and taking electronics apart and successfully putting them back together I'd take to a tech. Shouldn't cost much. I replaced mine in about 30 or 40 minutes.
Anyway. I've been through several amps and really didn't want to like my 7Pro. But I really do. Took a little tweaking but I really like how it sounds. Plenty of power and a decent compressor.

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't seen that before. My 7-Pro has never given me any problems, but I'm sure it has the older chip, so I may swap out for the new one, just to be safe.

Gave me an excuse to buy a bunch of heatshrink from Mouser to make up for the shipping cost.
What is the latest revision on the board? G? Any idea how recently the latest revision was implemented?
Pretty sure they are up to J.
If U2 is ICE2A165, it's not the latest and greatest. Should be ICE2A265.

Mine was bought new last august. Gc doesn't keep a lot of stock on hand so it probably wasn't around long. No issues of any kind thus far and I like this amp more every time I turn it on!

Same here. Except for replacing the 12AX7 I've had zero issues and killer tone for four years now. Not to mention all the headroom I'd ever want.
I've heard many say the 7pro is underpowered. I think the linear taper on the master volume is what causes this impression. I know it doesn't quite reach the advertised power output but the master volume works consistently all the way up.
That and most Ampegs are happy to have the gain cranked.
Other tests besides the one Bass Gear Mag did have proved that it actually does reach its advertised power output.
Didn't know that. Bass gear is the only one I ever read.
Plenty of power for me either way.

I remember following other tests with great interest seeing the big fuss you made around another brand lying about their advertised output and the only way the pro 7 could get got close the the advertised 1000 watts at 5%THD was by plugging into the effects return (power amp in) and it was still under its advertised rated power, something like 960 watts at 6% THD. When I asked the tester how many watts it was at 5%THD he couldn't remember. Funny that!
Why the lies?
Well don't get me wrong. I have tons of respect for Tom Bowlus and what he does at Bass Gear, and I believe they came by their results honestly. I'm just saying that someone else did some measurements as well and got pretty close to the 1000w, measuring both at the input and the effects loop, like 965 or 975w, which is well within the tolerance range of accuracy. Why there was such a disparity, I don't know, but I don't think it was agenda-driven on anyone's part who participated.
As for the "Show ignored content" notice that seems to have popped up, I'll be happy to answer anyone's questions the best I can except his.
Im at about 18 mos on my svt 7 and it still sounds great. No problems here. I have read on here that it sounds a lot like an svt cl. I have never played a cl but i love the 7 and as long as it holds out, i have no interest in getting another amp.
getting hung up on watts is a mistake we all make always. 1000 watts versus 900 is probably not noticeable by the human ear anyway. with the right cab my svt - 7 could cause serious damage to one ears.....nobody should play that loud nowadays. i crank the gain to about 5 and it is way loud and easily could go higher but i prefer a cleaner sound and use JohnK pedals to get my dirt
Read the whole thread on that Jimmy. Lots of good, albeit, hard to comprehend info in there. I am not a rocket scientist unlike others around here.
Either way, Like the head, the power output (what ever that may be, it's loud enough for me)and the size. Small with out being to small. Although I put mine in a rack bag.
