Ampeg V4 Club

My new love. Got the whole set up for $530. V4/ B-40 cab. Cab has 2 old Square back Eminence and 2 Eminence deltas sealed off in separate chambers like a SVT. Sounds a lot like my friends dads 68 SVT stack but it breaks up at a reasonable volume.

Wow, sweet deal!

#42: 2behead; V4 Nice deal!
#43: bassbobh; V4BH I'm not sure what I'm more jealous of, your G&L or your Sadowsky.

Hi guys,

I need a quick advise. The driver tube of my mid-70's V4-B is broken. What would be a good replacement to get close to the original condition? Does the driver tube have any effect on the actual sound or can I throw in every ECC82/12AU7?

Thanks...

Schematic calls for 12Au7

From my quick research it seems any one will do. I think the sound changes when changing the big boy tubes.

Hi
IME the driver tube does not have as obvious an impact on tone as the preamp tubes have, but you'd want to have a good reliable and well balanced tube in that position.
Screening for microphonics is not as important here as for preamp tube, but I found having a good tube in that position is quite important too. To my ears the most obvious effect of a good tube in that position is to give better attack. It's effect on tone is more difficult to tell for me.
I use 12AU7 RCA Cleartops and am very happy with them, but good current production tubes will probably be Ok as well. A little tube swapping will let you find your own truth.
Others may say otherwise :)
