Ampeg V4 Club

I'm interested to hear this as well. The V4 amps it's really just two different inputs into the same pre-amp. The only difference is each one has it's own volume control/gain tube. I did notice when I had my V4 that one channel was louder than the other, but as they have separate tubes driving their gain and I put a NOS tube in one and not in the other (that and it was around 40 years old) it's not too surprising there was a little variance.

I'd be interested in hearing a sample too.

That's my experience too. The only way to have really different tones from the two inputs is to put two very different tubes (tonewise) in positions 1 and 2.

Here's mine. 1976 V4 with SVT-610 HLF. (The grill was replaced by fliptops to match the head). i hope I got the pic with this post.:D

Two quick runs thru the Matchbox Blues. :bassist:

MB1 is just one input, MB2 is 2. Let me know if you want a less mid-rangey tune. There is a change in volume for sure with both engaged and I did my best to not adjust the recording levels outside of clip prevention.

Hi guys - maybe I missed something, but do I understand that it isn't possible to bridge channels (main input in jack Normal 1, bridge between jacks Bright 1 and Normal 2) on a 70's V-4B, like you can do on a 70's SVT?

V4Bs don't have normal/bright inputs like SVTs.
Only one input 1 and one onput 2, with a volume knob for each input.
So you can't bridge inputs like on a SVT.
If you want to use both inputs at the same time, with a single instrument, you have to use a Y jack, or a split box.
But then again, there is only one preamp with two inputs, and a single eq stage.

Have any of you tube rolled the pre-amp tubes, and if so, what were your results? Currently, I have a set of groove tubes in there, which aren't bad, but I recently found a bunch of basically nos RCAs, Sylvanias, and Raytheon 12au7/12ax7s. I plan on finding ones that work the best from those, but I would still like to upgrade the 6k11, 6cg7, and 12dw7.

Your best bet for tube rolling in this head is the V1 and V2 slots which are both 12AX7s. Those are the first gain stage for each channel in the amp. If I'm remembering all of this right, the third 12AX7 is for the reverb circuit and the 12DW7 is your driver tube. Those two really wont make any difference in tone. The 6K11 I believe is related to the mid-frequency circuit and the 6CG7 to the bass and treble. You could try different tube there if you want, but the 6K11 at least is long out of production so finding a few of those to test could be difficult and expensive. Never tried playing around with the 6CG7 personally.

My new love. Got the whole set up for $530. V4/ B-40 cab. Cab has 2 old Square back Eminence and 2 Eminence deltas sealed off in separate chambers like a SVT. Sounds a lot like my friends dads 68 SVT stack but it breaks up at a reasonable volume.
