Right now I'm taking a break from the Chord Studies book to practice, rubato, playing chord tones over ii-V-I progressions (per your suggestion in our last conversation). Once I get more mastery in that, I'll return to the Chord Studies book and will definitely tackle the 4's and 5's. They are indeed tricky, more in concept that execution (for me at least) - really "getting" what's going on in the exercises is definitely harder than the "here we're doing chord tones with an approach from above, here's an approach from below, here's above and below" of ex's 1,2, and 3.

Funny. But you are probably correct about this. Aside from lessons on the instruments themselves, these players most likely learned how to play and how to feel this music by being around it and in it. It is the twisted form of rock and blues, two other musical styles that don't require paying a tuition to learn how to play either.

From their shipping info page, it says that UPS Worldwide Express is what they recommend for fastest international delivery, and that costs $55. But they also have "International Regular Air Mail" which is $6.84 and a lot more reasonable, although possiblly a lot slower (7 - 30 days).

(I was just thinking that if I ordered it through Amazon Japan, they take care of the freight forwarding using a "UPS equivalent" in Japan, and I have the convenience of specifying when to bring it to me etc.)

And as someone mentioned, cdbaby also have the option to download the music. But call me old-school, but I like having the actual CD (not just the data :D).

But anyway, I'll be placing my order shortly!

Soundclips sound great! Can't wait to hear the album. Hopefully I get it in more like 7 days, and not 30!

Wow! I guess you are right. Well, I wouldn't pay $55 for the CD, not when there are way cheaper options to go with. I assume that by saying that the delivery could extend to 30 days, this just covers them in case that it actually takes that long. But, I personally never heard of any piece of mail taking 30 days to be delivered, even internationally.

josh freese from devo's solo album costs $75,000. of course, for that money he'll join your band for a month and take you mini-golfing with mark mothersbaugh. he does have a $7 option but that's just to download mp3's. booooooooring!

what would we get from jeff berlin if we pay $75,000 for his new album?

I recorded off of my trusty Jeff Berlin Markbass cabinet and a guitar amp. Then I chorused them both. The combination made what I might refer to as an odd bass sound, a little grungy, a little middle-y, a little unusual. But, this tone, while not a mind blowing original, is still different enough to be noticed. My tone by the way, is a continuing evolution. I'm not done finding new sounds. With my reputation in music, when I am in the midst of fixing things, this means that people will hear me while I am doing the repairing. My tone is continuing to evolve even as my playing is. I don't think that I ever recorded solos as wonderful to me as some that are on this CD. I hope that CDBaby does a good business because my music is not for the masses. It is for people who want to hear players striving for the best that they have. But, as a bass CD, I do think that it is unique in that I don't know of any other jazz CD where the bass solos are in front as much as this one is.

BTW I practice grooves to a drum machine. Since our discussion here I have been practicing more without it and have noticed a couple things happen. One I am more aware of my overall bassline and have been working to correct flaws that were covered up by the DM. Two I have been able to work up the speed of licks/lines faster as I am not doing the "stair step" aproach (bpm= 60,62,64, etc) to working up speed. I should point out, though, that I have been playing bass for 16 years and play several gigs a month, play in bands, etc.

A click metronome or a drum machine beat, trade offs between these? I can see using the click only for hearing the bass more, but also adding the drum machine in for a more musical, so a mix of both building on the other would seem good.

Never really thought about it that way though.
What about good old foot tapping, stomping, body movement and feel? Is that similar as far as building on the other two and the next step you feel?

I've been wondering if there's a downside to this metronome click=> drum machine => body/soul movements. Perhaps many/most do this anyway inadvertently???

I do appreciate your tenacity posting here BTW. Attack the topics/idea(which can get heated), never the person.

There's no difference in factual representation of a downbeat between a metronome or a drum machine. They just sound different.

Just thought I'd bump this thread by saying that Jeff's new album is fantastic! Really upfront, raw, no-nonsense jazz bass solos to keep my ears busy and satisfied for a long time to come!

I meant to order the CD, but in my haste, I ended up buying the downloads accidentally. But it ended up being a good thing because I got it on my iPod right away!

Haven't heard the new one yet, but I will buy and download this weekend. If it's anything like the last CD, it will be great. I really, really enjoyed In Harmony's Way.

If you enjoyed "In Harmony's Way", then I think you'll really like this one. AFAIK, there are no extra "guest" musicians as there were on "In Harmony's Way" (Mike Stern, Dave Liebman etc), but the vibe is very similar and even more jazzy IMO.

i must admit i think jeff went a bit too far when he came back. but let's all relax a little bit, eh? i think he was trying to be funny more than anything. of course, when you're on the receiving end it changes your perspective, but still...
