Anyone Know the True Origin of "Carrots"?

OK, so I've been on here a lot of years, and I must say - I don't really get it. Anyone been around long enough to know how this carrot thing originated or what the true meaning is? I mean, could it be stupider, or is that the whole point?

I mean, is it a Bugs Bunny thing? It is a play on words as in 24 "carats" meaning golden? Why not broccoli in honor of Dana Carvey or spinach in honor of Popeye? Could be apples in honor of Johnny Appleseed or maybe beets in honor of the Borscht Belt?

If you don't know, feel free to make stuff up. The possibility is that fun might be had here.

Mods move if you feel so inclined, but this is where I see the carrot thing the most - right here in this forum.

I wondered the same thing for a long time.

The only thing I can figure is that it comes from 'dangling carrots' like in Bugs Bunny..as in 'should I get this new bass or is it just dangling carrots'?

Sarcastic answers are so much funnier, but... it's an ancient meme on TB to include "carrots" as an option on a poll meaning "none of the above" or "I have to vote to see the numbers, but I don't care about the poll, so carrots", etcetera.

There are varied stories of it's origin - my favorite is that @john turner used to add it to polls to spice them up. Polls like, "what's the best bass for metal", with four non-metal choices, etcetera. Perhaps he'll chime in and confirm or deny it...

i started it because as soon as the version of vb software that tb uses allowed polls, every other doofus on the forums started 100 polls about stupid stuff just to start a poll. so i added the carrot option to the poll, maxxed out the votes for carrots, and closed the polls, in an effort to convey the general board dislike for stupid polls.

now, here's -another- explanation, so hopefully the next guy that comes along and asks about carrots will have their answer. .

"Domesticated" carrots, LOL. You gotta watch out for the wild ones; they'll bite.

I've always understood the carrots option to mean: "I know this survey is completely ridiculous because I'm asking about something totally subjective and I'm going to make up my own mind regardless of how people vote anyway and if you really don't care about it one way or the other you can pick "carrots" as your option."
