Anyone Making A Class D Power Head?

I have been using an an 8.5 pound Crown xls1000 Drivecore for a couple of months now.The 3u SKB shallow rack case it's in is heavier than the amp. I run it with an Aguilar Tone Hammer pedal into an 800 watt, 4 ohm GK 4x10 with neo speakers that weights 41 pounds. I still can't believe how light this system is. Plus it's loud as heck and most importantly, it sounds sweet. Time will tell if it all holds up to steady gigging.

Ya, I miss Vail, too ;)

Yep, I recall some of that exchange back then. :rollno: Was making me second guess my new DriveCore XLS 1500 purchase, Dang.

But to OP, I use it bridged @ 8 ohms into a single UL410 cab with either a BBE-BMax (non-T) or Alembic F-1X pre. Mostly at a huge biker bar the size of a airplane hanger, out in Magnolia ( Kruzzer's). No PA support for me and it fills the place up with TX blues-rock. :bassist:

I carry it in a shallow, Gator 4 sp rack case. Pre-Crown-Fender rack tuner. Easy schleppin.

I went back and read that very long thread on your build, questions, anwers, arguments, etc.

I believe the Crown DriveCore XLS series has built in Xover mode that might help you get where you wanna be with the open back cab. IIRC.

I tried all the different settings here at home when I first got my Crown. I did not even have a real pre yet, so I used my Markbass F1 as a pre.

I tried a Xover setting with a GB112T cab over a GB 212T cab and was able to cut alot of the lows outta the top 12" cab. That's if you still need that. Great looking rig there. I may wanna roll out to Beaumont and hear it live one day. Later, ernie.

thnx, ernie, I'll give you a shout before our next gig over here.

Educate me about the Xover feature on the Crown.

I've always wanted to know: does it let you choose a 30hz high-pass setting, or is it limited to 50 hz? I really like the 30hz setting on my PLX....

From the Manual ...

"The PureBand™
Crossover System provides a variable state Linkwitz-Riley 24dB/octave fi lter allowing you to choose a point
between 50Hz and 3kHz on 1/12th octave centers."

50Hz is as low as it goes.

:hmm:

Correct, I'm tossing out everything below 30hz. The QSC PLX-series amps have a switch enabling you to cut out nothing, cut out everything below 30hz, or everything below 50 hz.

The 50 hz setting takes a bit of the oomph out of the low B string, but the 30hz setting is great. You don't notice any cut in the lows, but the speakers dance around less. It tightens the lows without devaluing them.

Too bad the Crown's high-pass filter is limited at 50hz. I would get one if not for that.

I used the 50Hz setting once on my Crown 1500 at a gig. It did just sorta attenuate the Low B string to my ears. I've not used it since. But I do make sure the clip filtres always stay on with any settings on this amp.

I too woulda liked the amp to offer below 50Hz setting. But its' working out for me so far.

Exactly! As Eric says, the point is to eliminate the useless thuds and thumps that eat up our wattage and cause overexcursion of our speakers.
I've never had an issue with that. I've never needed to use more than half volume at any gig and I've never run more than 500 watts. 1500 watts should be head crushing loud already and your cabinet should be designed to handle that kind of power if you have an amp that large in front of it.

Just my opinion. Still a cool concept, though. Maybe Crown will upgrade the firmware somewhere down the line.

I just returned to the pre/power fold via a new Crown XTI 1002. Upon first connecting the amp's USB to my PC running System Architect 3, the amp detected a new firmware and upgraded itself. From within System Architect, I can click to drag the crossover anywhere on a range from 20 to 20K Hz. If one doesn't like dragging, the "crossover frequency" field can also be manually entered all the way down to 20 Hz. FYI.
