Ask a guy from New Jersey anything...

You keep talking about pork roll without using it's proper name:Taylor Ham! Proper way to order: Taylor Ham& egg on a hard roll! Love those portugese rolls, chewy crust... haven't found anything like them out west, though I just discovered Taylor Ham here in the supermarket in Longmont. I always thought a great name for a band would be the North Jersey Diner Kings. Whateva!

You sure do things funny up there in Morris County. :)

I've got nearly 60 years in Central/South Jersey and everywhere I've ever been all over the state (even in Princeton...;)) it's PREC, (Porkrolleggncheese...one word). Waitresses even use the shorthand PREC/SPK (Porkrolleggncheese with Salt, Pepper, Ketchup). But I never ordered one in Morris County...do they even have luncheonettes and diners out there?

except if you walk into a deli in north jersey and order it that way you'll be laughed out the door. Proper order is a "Tayloreggandcheese, SPK".

25 years of ordering between Sussex and Bergen Counties... never laughed at, asked to repeat myself, or corrected. Maybe things have changed in the last 15 years... but that would kinda make the taylor ham vs pork roll debate as misguided as TB newbies trying to change the 'carrot' choice in polls. :p

Rutts Hut in Clifton

If I'm heading up north for dogs... it's to "Johnny & Hanges" for a couple "All the way"! But I wouldn't turn down a trip to Rutts Hut either :)

hearing this whole debate, I've heard it both ways but I know better to favor one over the other. but, I HAVE heard it referred to consistently as "taylor ham".

Trucks just seem to throw things into the street here, must be all the potholes.

Potholes don't seem to slow the biotches down though....
Try driving 295 or the Turnpike with one of those big-arsed tractor trailers behind you. They will ride RIGHT UP your damn bumper no matter how fast you go. They force you into the left lane, then you have the idiot in the mustang riding your butt..sometimes I wish I drove a tank. Just swivel teh turret around and BAM. See-ya :)

No, but he's great for a few cheap thrills :). Get a few attractive ladies to pile into your car and drive to some of the more desolate areas of the Pine Barrens (the supposed home of the jersey devil) for a "Jersey Devil hunt". Park the car, turn off the lights and just wait and listen... after a few mins of quiet as suspense builds, you scream "OMG WHAT WAS THAT!??" they will ALL invariably scream and pile on you. 100% without fail. Then of course when they start the "let's get out of here!" you pretend that you cant start the car... "wait, I need kisses from all before I start this car.." It worked wonders. LOL I was evil when I was younger.

For reference, the Pine Barrens (Invalid Link Removed) a really desolate place full of pine forests and cedar swamps.

For real, where is Johnny & Hanges now? I remember a couple years ago my dad was like "lets go get some!" which turned into "Where the **** did they move?" Which devolved into "lets go to Rutts Hut." :D

The fact that the older side of my family revolved around Bloomfield/Clifton turned into a good treat

lol can't pull the "failed ignition" trick anymore, damn idiot proof cars of today....

Pork Roll is about love, exquisite meatman craftsmanship and precision, not $$

Sig-worthy

Until someone can present me with conclusive evidence that there is a product more meatysaltysweetdelicious than bacon, I refuse to believe it. So far, all I've heard is hearsay testimony from people who drink from the same water source.

Are you able to provide the aforementioned conclusive evidence to support your claim?

I can say the same about living here in Southern California, except that everything is 20 minutes away. :smug:

PLUS, we have way more hot woman and no silly accent.

20 minutes? Only if you're a.) travelling by helicopter or, b.) driving at 3 AM.

Hot women are everywhere! There's lots of silly accents in SoCal as well, once one finds people that have the ability to speak English. :D

Question for OP - why the condescension towards North Jersey? Your take is very Philly-centric.

My family was from Fairlawn and Paterson (though I still have a few cousins in Clifton too)...

Since 99 they are at 23-20 Maple Ave in Fairlawn and recently I see they have opened a second location in Wayne. I think I need to plan a road trip, I have no connection to Fair Lawn any more, but Wayne is easier to fit into a trip.

GREAT find!

It's only fake condescension, don't take my dissing it too seriously. North jersey actually contains some of the most beautiful areas in the entire state. Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon (which is where I almost bought my last house), Morris counties...very nice. However, the stereotypical negative NJ traits have many of their origins from in and around the wider NYC area: Union, Essex, Hudson counties. Each of those counties have their very good points and are home to many good people, however if you want to see what people mean when they talk about NJ being: "full or oil refineries", being "dirty", having "over aggressive drivers", just cross over into NJ from NYC and drive down the Turnpike or Rt1. If this is all you would see of NJ, it may be very easy to believe the stereotypes..

my brother used to live in Jackson. His backyard backed right up to the pines. During the day his yard was gorgeous. At night? Holy crap that place was creepy and pitch black.
I've been through the pines a few times and lemme tell ya, that place can get freaky. Cool, but freaky.

When I was about 12 and in the Boy Scouts, we did this land-navigation thing where we went into the Pines for miles, then had to navigate our way north to a point, then south - sort of a huge triangle. In the middle of the pines, miles away from everything, we came across the ruins of two old houses. No roads, no paths or lanes...
The tops had literally caved in and they were just shells. You want to talk about having the creeps and feeling like you were being watched. We got the hell out of there. I would love to go back now and see if I could find them.

GREAT find!

This is what I always buy... usually the 'thin sliced' package (wife prefers it thin and well done)

I actually just finished that cut into short strips (like coarsely grated cheese in size) scrambled into some eggs & eaten on rye toast with a healthy dose of hot sauce :)

right in my back yard... my mailing address is Toms River, but I'm actually in Manchester. I'm pretty close to where route 571 crosses into Jackson.
