Bassbrock, great review, and photos! The grain looks very nice...

I'm extremely impressed with the array of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] provided on Ibanez website.
If there's another manuf. in the $500 range that lists these kind of specs, I haven't seen it.

Right now, mine still has the Elixirs installed at the factory. I hope to compare the tone to some fresh non-coated strings soon. I feel like the Elixirs sorta cut out some of the highs and high mids.

Loving mine, i went over it with a fine tooth comb. Its really a nice bass, frets are finished well, tuners holding tune great. Nice finish satin but smooth, great tone , no real noticeable fretbuzz with low action. Made in 2007.

Mine has 2 small 1/2 inch long finish cracks coming from the bridge screws on both side, guessing it was in cold temps that caused this. If I paid 500$ i would send it back , but its not bothering me as you have to look at it in the light to see , this will get plenty of wear.

I dig it , My fav still was a 1994 april atk300 i got for 20$ with a hardcase, both super thrashed but amazing player i got 200$ for it in august, miss that one.

Hi Beams seem like a good choice, although I am a bit curious about Ernie Balls.

If I decided to make mine a player in my band stable, I'll probably get a custom set of .050-070-090-.120 D'Addario Pro Steels, since my band tunes CGCF. D'Addario is the best option I have found for ordering custom sets of oddball-guage strings.

they are a little more expensive, but Circle K Strings are the BEST for ordering strange gauges, sets, etc. you can just about anything. some sets perfectly balanced for that tuning you want. Ive yet to try them myself, because I like my Hi Beams. but I think I will pretty soon just so see how they play. heard great things though.

Ironically enough... Earnie Balls and D'Addarios (as well as GHS Boomers) have been the only strings i HAVE used on my ATK for the past decade!

Now, the bass, back then, was used for a heavy band... so the SUPER bright sounding Earnie Balls were my first choice. They cut through on 'attack mode' SOOOOOO well! However, they seemed to lose their brightness rather quickly, and that left them a tad dull for my liking.

The D'Addario's, however, while not AS bright, kept a more consistant tone as they aged... so i preffered them generally.

The GHS' were just cheap/easily found back ups for on-the-road string breaks.

That's been pretty much my experience too. Power Slinkies work OK with drop C, but the string tension isn't consistant enough. The heavy-guage GHSs have been what I've used for the most part, but I've never been thrilled at their tone. They are pretty much the only widely-available string set with a .115 low string, though.

Touche. I did peruse the ibanez site while waiting for my bass, I must have been distracted by the pretty pictures. I wont complain abt it being a laminate, between that and the girth of the neck I don't think it's going anywhere.

I like the elixirs currently on the bass. I usually use Regular or Super Slinkies or DR Lo-Rider strings on my basses, but I'm not in any hurry to change the stock strings out at the moment. I feel like the strings give a great low end thumb and punch, which is exactly what I want...though I would like a little more high end (dialing it in with the treble tends to make it too artificial sounding to me). I'm excited to try new strings one day and see what works, but as I said, I'm definitely not in any hurry. My other basses provide the different tonal options I need, so this just adds to the diversity!
