AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Tonight's gig at Empire Casino in Yonkers NY. 3 long one hour sets. Ugh!

Thank god for Monique, Fodera, and Duke's AudioKinesis Cabs!

You guys are the best! Thank you all so much for your enthusiastic support, it really lifts my spirits whether it's been a good day or an... interesting... one.

Duke.....You certainly have my permission to use the name ThunderTots...

THANK YOU!!

....or I could sell one and send you the other for "modding" to a 4/8 ohm?

Whichever you prefer. Can you remind me what handles we used on your Tots?

In addition to the 4/8 ohm switch, I could theoretically add a midrange smoother switch so that the cab would have two different voicings.

I'm inclined to keep the Tots compact, as I think that's their market niche, and I'd like to keep their footprint compatible with the TC112 and Hathor 1203 so they can be stacked.

That being said, I'm open to suggestions from you loupee, or anyone else!

Looking forward to hearing the combo of 1203/Birdhaus!

I'm looking forward to you hearing it too! Hope to get started on it within the next ten days or so.

Duke
Any updates you can share with us?

One other project I forgot to mention. This arose out of the "cab dimensions" poll thread I ran a few months ago. Seems like there are bass players who still like the big tube amps, and so of course they want a correspondingly wide-body cab. But as far as I can tell, these guys really don't have much to choose from in the way of wide-dispersion, wide-body cabs. So at some point, might be a month from now, might be three months from now, I'm going to at least try to offer those guys a wide-body cab with good dispersion.

I'd love to hear these Tots, that's for sure. The name is catchy as hell, too.

Even with my bands moving towards IEMs full time, part of me still doesn't want to not have my TC118 behind me on stage. I did run a lot of numbers, and it'll actually be probably 2 more years or so until we're at that point, so I'll get a good amount of use out of it until then. Just need to figure out if I want to get a stand for it to angle it more towards my ears, or maybe even pole mount it (since it has the pole mount option).

I'm trying to take photos but I'm having trouble with my camera and PC coordinating together, I'll keep trying but I do have 2 side handles (metal) and a bigger one on top (also metal)....hope that helps.....

anything you want to create that makes them better, I'm a "go" for it......

So the Birdhaus 46 is going into actual production, eh? I never considered that such a small cab could have any utility for me...until very recently. But I've got this idea for a fretless bass + percussion duo to improvise grooves in low-volume venues, such as some of the downscale bistros and small bars around here, for which a Birdhaus could be ideal.

Got a selling price in mind, Duke? And are you allowed to reveal it, without violating TalkBass terms of service? (I know, I know, I haven't paid off my Hathors yet. Thanks for being patient with me. I'm working on it!)

Just curious...

I would also like to find a 115 cab that is organic sounding without any additional drivers for hi Freq.. One that extends deep yet stays tight , doesn't get mushy and has low mid punch yet is smooth up to 4 or 5k that doesn't been too much.. Would be good to be able to handle power and . Some of teh newer gigs im heading out on require a rock tone but it needs to be clean and loud. Is it possible to do that and have it perform at least as good as a 410 in VOL?
If that makes any sense at all?
Sort of the sound of the old bag end s15 but better bottom extension and that can handle hi dB and not go pooof .
I need at least a pair.
I've been looking and looking .
Im doing gigs this summer with a touring situation and its gonna be loud. Guitar Hero type stuff. ..
I know.. My ideal 115 cab may just be a pipe dream

I thought my search for the Perfect 12 was a pipe dream. @DukeLeJeune creates magic with his cabs. Try the TC115 and you will find tone heaven. And send Duke a message about your particular need, he seems fairly versatile modifying his designs some. But as far as my H1203, I can't believe the amount of sound that comes out of that llittle box! I can only imagine what a 15" would be like! Also I think Duke has a H series 15 in the works. The Hathor series are more growly for rock.

Good luck!

My buddy in NY has the TC115... Might be the best cab that i have ever played../ tried.. . I wonder he could do a 115 full range type can without hi freq component that is not muddy..

A single 115 that goes up to 4k/5k without beaming much? Is that even possible? :eyebrow:

The Duke magic is in the crossovers. What you are describing above sounds more like a greenboy bassic15 or barefaced compact. Can a 115 match a 410? I think some 115's can best some 410's in volume. But given equivalent quality speakers and design in each cab a 410 should be louder. Off axis? Who knows.

But for rock tone clean and loud I'd go with a Hathor(s) of some sort. And I did.

I dont know.... . I have no idea how that stuff works.. But i am willing to learn... This thread has LOTS of great info.... With friendly people willing to help.. Love it... Those listed specs say a 3015 is good to about 4k....
I may be reading it all wrong..

Even with a single 15, Duke can do some cool stuff with smoothing filters (and has on other cabs).

Thundertot 15s could be an option (well, if Duke makes 'em). I don't know what the woofer is in the 1505 (forgive me if it's been mentioned in the thread), or how high it goes without beaming too badly, but if it's a good full-range driver (if it would sound okay without the mid driver engaged) you could ask Duke to wire a switch that would bypass the crossover and allow you to run it full-range, sans mid. That would give you a more versatile, albeit bigger and more expensive, cab. Or maybe a Thundertot 15 and a 1505 would play nicely together? It's up to Duke, of course, to decide whether it's worthwhile for him to make a single-driver 15" cab.

I feel a little funny popping in here periodically -- I don't own one of Duke's cabs (though I've appreciated his crossover work in some of the MAS cabs I've owned), but he's one of a handful of designers on here I admire. If I weren't playing what I'm playing now, a 1505 would be at the top of my list of cabs to try. Looking at the 12", 15", and 18" cabs, it seems to hit a sweet spot (for a lot of people, anyway) in price : performance and in being a one-cab solution for a lot of gigs (though some folks would need more than a single 15"). One would, I think, cover most of what I do and two would be formidable indeed. I still think about picking up a 1203 for a nice tiny-but-capable cab.

What about single driver 18" cabs? Thunderporkers? Thunderswine? No? How about Thundertot, Thundertween (always on its iPhone), and Thunderteen (brooding, wants to borrow the car), in order of ascending woofer size? Not as catchy as the original, you say? Tough crowd.

Addendum: You know, I do have one of Duke's DIY 110s (albeit with a Deltlite II 2510 instead of the "stock" driver). To my untrained eye, the frequency response plots for the 2510 and a Kappalite 3015 don't look that different -- the Kappalite's plot looks smoother -- and both have a "useable frequency response" to 4 KHz.

I'm guessing that's on-axis. Don't know how much it would change off-axis for the Kappalite 15" relative to the Deltalite II 10", but, if the sound is similar, it definitely doesn't do the two-or-three-way, hi-fi thing, but you can still get a good grind and usable harmonics out of the 2510. Slap is of the decidedly old-school variety, but viable. And haven't lots of people built 2x15" cabs with the 3015?

I've A/B'd that against most of the TB darlings and it always has either held its own or beat them. Currently have an MAS109 that is great but I still gig the H1203 more, mostly due to size/weight. Checked out some Barefaced cabs which are pretty damn cool, but the H1203 still impressed me more with one specialized exception (the Barefaced Two10 does overdrive spectacularly).

Similar experiences, here. I am a huge 1203 fanboy!
