AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Mike, as I mentioned to you on the phone the other day, the 1203 is AMAZING! I was able to try a double 1203 stack tonight, and OMG, that is nice!
1855 should arrive shortly...
Man, I have a TC112, and the 1203 is looking tempting.
Just have to keep telling myself I don't need another cab, I don't need another cab...

Haven't tried it yet, but that's a good call. I'll give it a whirl tonight.
Eagerly awaiting the 1855...
nostatic is getting a1203 to check out. i'll probably go over to his place and take my tc112 to make some comparisions.

Do we have updated Audiokinesis pricing information? I'm not at the purchasing stage yet (VERY happy with my TC112), but it'd be good to know...
As promised, a shot of the backside of Hathors 1203 and 1855, showing some ports plugged:
Okay as you can see, we have the 1203's stacked, with one in sealed-box mode and the other ported. In my living room (which isn't representative of anything out in the real world), that's the configuration that sounded best. And fortunately that Kappalite woofer has enough x-max that we haven't just thrown away our excursion-limited power handling.
The ports on the 1855 are plugged on a diagonal, to maintain a symmetrical airload on the back of the cone. In theory, the larger the woofer diameter and the longer the voice coil, the more susceptible it is to cone rocking from an uneven airload (some subwoofers have double-spider suspension systems to combat cone rock, but I don't know of any that would work well in a bass cab). For those who like to geek out on driver specs (yeah baby!), here's a link:

As you can see, that woofer definitely need serious midrange helpage, but in turn it rewards us with a lot of capability in the bottom few octaves, AND it doesn't have any nasty peaks that would require a massive inductor to tame. So we can run it full range, and just blend in the mids.
You might also have noticed the veritable plethora of screws holding the ports in place. Both of these are very high-internal-pressure cabs, as they have long-throw woofers with powerful motors shoehorned into relatively small boxes. Those screws are to make sure we don't get air leakage underneath the port flanges.
In my living room, two ports plugged sounded best on the Hathor 1855. That gives us a tuning frequency of about 35 Hz (normal tuning frequency with all ports open is about 48 H), with a calculated F3 of 53 Hz and a fairly gentle rolloff from there down to the lower 30's (- 10 @ 31 Hz).
You'll also notice the lack of switches on the back of the 1855. This is a very high power cab, and imo the cost and weight of the crossover parts that would be needed for meaningful switchology just aren't worth it. So this cab pretty much is what it is, plus whatever your tone controls can do to it.
TomBowlus, hope you have time to check the Hathor 1855 with a couple of your tube heads with 0, 2, & 4 ports plugged.
That H1855 looks like a POTENT cab!
Curious how the sealed vibe comes across with some good valve-power.

I just received the 1855 today, and have only had a little time to spend playing through it (which was mostly spent comparing it to other AudioKinesis cabs, using the same amp - Markbass F500 - and the same two basses - MTD 535 and Carvin PB5). Having a BLAST so far, and looking forward to breaking out the tube heads!
I do not have a YBA300 on hand, but I do have a YBA200.
walkabout, buster, monique - i've got 'em. please tell me you have one of those in your closet to try with the 1855. also curious about the 1203 stack vs the 1855 and the baer ml112s
The F500's low end is so tight, it shouldn't need the port plugs unless the venue was boom-from-hades territory.
My understanding is if you keep the level on the YBA200 down to non-OD levels, it sounds quite a bit like the YBA300, just won't go as loud while staying clean.
Of course, both the Hathor's should handle OD REALLY well.

The uberwoofer in that cab is far from its optimum in a sealed box; that option is included primarily as a coping mechanism for uberboomy rooms.
