AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Thanks for the well wishes. Actually was open procedure as the doc said it would be quicker/easier in my case. Up and around, hopefully home today as long as I keep the hospital food down.

Up and around is the ticket - I had my appendix out (12 hours after it had burst, so they discovered) just over a year ago. My recovery was a few days longer than it needed to be, almost entirely as a result of me lounging around in bed all day. Once I got up and about, I felt orders of magnitude better.

Dude - that's not pretty. Caught mine early though I was originally supposed to be on a plane to Beijing but the trip got postponed. Burst usually leads to sepsis which leads to bad places.

This has been a nostatic medical moment. We now return you to As the Hathor Turns starring Duke LeJeune.

That was pretty good. But you should have gone with 'All my Thunderchildren"

Out of surgery. Hurts like a mother and no lifting anything more that 10lbs for a month. Duke, may need that dual 3" cab :)

Great to hear that you are up and at them!

This may break every rule in the Commercial User Policy, but it must be done. The world must be told. My new dual 3" cab is going to turn the bass cab market on its head! Preliminary specs:

- Efficiency 90 dB*
- Useful low-end 20 Hz**
- Power handling 1000 watts***
- Easy-reset Total Protection Circuit****

* Calculated from the T/S parameters, this is a conservative number, so now you know that you can trust all of my other specs.
** "Useful low end" is defined as "there is some detectable cone motion."
*** For one billionth of a second. One time.
**** Simply replace both of the blown drivers and this resets the Total Protection Circuit. Replacement drivers sold separately.

'The goggles...they do nothing!!!"

On a related note, I think Total Protection Circuit is playing Coachella.

Is it a dual 3" cab, with separate enclosures for each driver, which are each surrounded by a cushioned ring, facing each other, and connected to each other via an arched, slightly flexible, frame? :D ;)

Playing at a women's conference today, boisterous crowd, hall seats about 250.

I brought my MB200 head because it was just supposed to be a stage monitor, and I like the progressive volume control on the little guy.

Turned out they have snake trouble, so the TC112AF and MB200 are having to carry the house.

To my surprise, this little rig is doing just fine- with some headroom to spare!

there was a whole lot to unpack in this post of yours. took me a few rereads.

In the interest of giving credit where credit's due, I learned about the pitch shifting in the direction of the Helmholtz tuning frequency as the note decays from the book "Loudspeakers for Music Recording and Reproduction", by Philip Newell and Keith Holland. It's an excellent book about studio speaker design.

I've done a few custom designs for recording studios. One of these days I'm going to have a studio speaker system as part of my line-up. But I've got some bass cab designs to finish up first!

I'll help demo your studio monitors :)
R&D help. For science. Totally not a gear hog.

I think I have a beta-tester lined up, but I may need more than one...

The basic idea is, a midfield (rather than nearfield) system for a home studio, designed with small room acoustics very much in mind. So that means good radiation pattern control and multiple small subs. The former helps maximize the time delay between the first-arrival sound and most of the early reflections, and the latter smoothes out the in-room bass. Both of these steps help to make a small room sound like it's a bit bigger than it actually is, and (along with good dynamic range) are important for "impress the client" mode, which is hard to do well with small nearfield monitors. The mains would go to the left and right of the nearfield monitors (perhaps one or both in a corner, depending on the room lay out), and then the four small subs get sprinkled around, with two of them perhaps doing double duty as stands for the mains.

Update on the cabs.
I just got the B46 back fromDuke. I accidentally blew the speakers, I think 2 of them, in the 46. it was totally my fault . I was demoing a new pre with the BS amp and we pushed the cab right over the edge. Thank you Duke for the great customer service!
The point of all this is that not having the 46 for a bit and getting it back is sort of like hearing it again for the first time, if you know what I mean.

So testing abounded in various combinations of the 1203,b46, and MAS 16. All of which play well with each other depending the application needed. I presently been using the combo of 1203/16 with Vanderkley Aurora and B46/16 with the Baby Sumo /Shaw pre. The combination of near field and mid field radiation is something new to me with bass cabs. So far I'm loving what I'm hearing.

Hi, all. I currently run a couple Baer ML-112s (s1) and would like to potentially augment them with an AK cab that is more suitable for slap on my contemporary jazz gigs. I miss the airy tweeter of my old Epifani UL-112 cab but it gave up the ghost when pushed. What AK cab would you recommend me? Thanks.

Mark, my experience stacking the H1203 with an ML-112 was similar:
Sorry for my week-delayed reply. I did try playing the cabs together with the port on the Hathor open, again, after reading your reply. Not sure if they're fighting each other in the way you mention (I think maybe a bit, yeah) or if there's just too much of a bump in a certain frequency range that way (that, too), but the 1203/MAS 110 sub stack felt and sounded better with the port plugged on the Hathor. Hathor on its own -- plugged or unplugged, depending on my mood.

Thanks for pointing that out.

probably Thunderchild 1-12. The horn gets closer to tweeter"air" than the 3" on the Hathor.
